Every story just...didn't have a point? Every character felt emotionless and shallow. I read almost 300 pages and then decided to skip to The Lottery. Even that story, which is super famous, felt flat and characterless. I'm not a big fan of short stories to begin with, but I think that Jackson's writing truly shines in her novels. ( ) Kiramke | Jun 27, 2023 | “It isn’t fair, it isn’t right,” Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her.” “Charles?” she said. “We don’t have any Charles in the kindergarten.” Those are the types of endings that I love Shirley Jackson for! Unfortunately, those may have been the only two of their kind in this collection. All of the writing within is excellent! It is the ending of the other short stories that I didn't enjoy. Some didn't make sense, and others just sort of meander off into nothingness. Definitely not "A study in nightmare..." that the top of the front cover suggested! Still and all, "The Lottery" may well be, in my opinion, the greatest short story ever written! Every single time I read it, I get chills! Unbelievably amazing! Interesting within the context of SATF, but otherwise left far too many unanswered questions for me. I found 'The Lottery' online and did not read any other stories in this edition.
