Eudora Welty was born in Jackson, Mississippi on April 13, 1909. She was educated at the Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, Mississippi, and at the University of Wisconsin. She moved to New York in 1930 to study advertising at the Columbia University business school. After her mostrar más father's death, she moved back to Jackson in 1931. She held various jobs on local newspapers and at a radio station before becoming a publicity agent for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), part of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal program. Travelling through the state of Mississippi opened her eyes to the misery of the great depression and resulted in a series of photographs, which were exhibited in a one-women show in New York in 1936 and were eventually published as One Time, One Place: Mississippi in the Depression in 1971. She stopped working for the WPA in 1936. Her first stories, Magic and Death of a Travelling Salesman, were published in small magazines in 1936. Some of her better-known short stories are Why I Live at the P.O., Petrified Man, and A Worn Path. Her short story collections include A Curtain of Green, The Golden Apples, The Wide Net and Other Stories, and The Bride of Innisfallen and Other Stories. Her first novel, The Robber Bridegroom, was published in 1942. Her other novels include Delta Wedding, The Ponder Heart, Losing Battles, and The Optimist's Daughter, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972. She received the gold medal for fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1972. Her nonfiction works include A Snapshot Album, The Eye of the Storm: Selected Essays and Reviews, and One Writer's Beginnings. El corazón de los Ponder por Eudora Welty
Lo malo de Daniel Ponder es que, además de rico, es un hombre enfermizamente generoso. Cuando le da uno de sus arranques y se pone a regalar cosas, no hay quien lo pare, ni siquiera Edna, su sobrina. Es ella la que cuenta su historia, que alcanza su punto culminante cuando tío Daniel, ese pedazo de pan al que adoran todos los vecinos del pueblo, es acusado nada menos que de haber causado la muerte de su segunda esposa.
Laurel McKelva es una mujer de mediana edad que viaja a Nueva Orleans para hacerse cargo de su padre, un juez retirado que ha de someterse a una operación quirúrgica. El juez no logra recuperarse, y muere lentamente. Será entonces cuando Laurel emprenda un largo viaje de regreso a su hogar familiar en Mount Salus, Mississippi, llevando consigo el cuerpo de su padre, y siempre vigilada por la segunda esposa de éste, Fay, una mujer orgullosa y más joven que Laurel. En la enorme casa, rodeada de sus antiguos conocidos y de las paredes que la vieron crecer, Laurel ha de enfrentarse a los fantasmas de su juventud y a las deudas del pasado.… (más)
Narra el encuentro de tres generaciones de excéntricos descendientes de la abuela Granny Vaughn, que se reúnen en su vieja casa de Mississippi para celebrar su noventa cumpleaños en los tiempos más duros de la Depreseión. El invitado de honor será el nieto preferido de la abuela Vaughn, Jack Renfro, quien, por no perderse la celebración, se ha escapado de la cárcel de donde estaba previsto que lo liberaran al día siguiente.
Esta novela fue premio Pulitzer en 1972. vuelve a Mississippi debido a la enfermedad ocular de su padre el juez McKelva recientemente casado con Fay, una mujer más joven que la propia hija.
A partir de este entorno, la autora desarrolla un nudo de relaciones y un viaje de introspección de la protagonista, con toda una serie de personajes sureños.
