Renowned historian John Sweet offers a riveting Revolutionary Era drama of the first published rape trial in American history and its long, shattering aftermath, revealing how much has changed over two centuries--and how much has not.

On a moonless night in the summer of 1793 a crime was committed in the back room of a New York brothel--the kind of crime that even victims usually kept secret. Instead, seventeen-year-old seamstress Lanah Sawyer did what virtually no one in US history had done before: she charged a gentleman with rape.

Her accusation sparked a raw courtroom drama and a relentless struggle for vindication that threatened both Lanah's and her assailant's lives. The trial exposed a predatory sexual underworld, sparked riots in the streets, and ignited a vigorous debate about class privilege and sexual double standards. The ongoing conflict attracted the nation's top lawyers, including Alexander Hamilton, and shaped the development of American law. The crime and its consequences became a kind of parable about the power of seduction and the limits of justice. Eventually, Lanah Sawyer did succeed in holding her assailant accountable--but at a terrible cost to herself.

Based on rigorous historical detective work, this book takes us from a chance encounter in the street into the sanctuaries of the city's elite, the shadows of its brothels, and the despair of its debtors' prison. The Sewing Girl's Tale shows that if our laws and our culture were changed by a persistent young woman and the power of words two hundred years ago, they can be changed again.

A former Wall Street veteran, quarantined by the coronavirus, becomes consumed with madness--or the fulfillment of his own mythic fate.

"This beautiful fever dream of a novella put me in mind of Gabriel García Márquez because of its sense of romance--and humor--in the midst of calamity. I'll never look at Central Park the same way."
--Amanda Peet

"A heartbreaking story of the cloaked complexities of father-daughter love framed as a sort of virtuoso suicide note. In its depiction of the breakthrough longings that come with growing older, it also struck me, wonderfully, as a contemporary Death in Venice."
--Walter Kirn, author of Blood Will Out

"Biting and funny, The Reservoir is also deep and reflective. A mystery wrapped in a fever dream. A tale for our infectious times."
--Chris Carter, director/writer, creator of The X-Files

The Reservoir follows an unexceptional man in an exceptional time. We see our present-day pandemic world and New York City through the eyes of a former Wall Street veteran, Ridley, as he looks back upon his life in his enforced quarantine solitude, wondering what it all means and who he really is.

Sitting and brooding night after night, gazing out his huge picture window high above the Central Park Reservoir, Ridley spots a flashing light in an apartment across the park as if a lonely quarantined person is signaling him in Morse code. His determination to find out who this mystery woman is leads him on an epic quest that will ultimately tempt him with either delusional madness or the fulfillment of his own mythic fate.

Is he a dying man going mad or an everyman metamorphosing into a hero? Or both? We accompany Ridley as he leaves the safety of his apartment window to save the Fifth Avenue femme fatale and descends into a dangerous, increasingly surreal world of global conspiracies, madness, and sickness of this viral time. As Ridley's actions grow more and more uncharacteristic, he realizes the key to all the mysteries of now, and even all of history, seem to lie deep beneath the freezing waters of the reservoir.

The Reservoir is a twisted rom-com for our distanced time, when the merest touch could kill and conspiracy theories propagate like viruses--a contemporary union of Death in Venice, Rear Window, and The Plague.

With echoes of Toni Morrison's Beloved, Yejidé's novel explores a forgotten quadrant of Washington, DC, and the ghosts that haunt it.

"Yejidé's writing captures both real news and spiritual truths with the deftness and capacious imagination of her writing foremothers: Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison and N.K. Jemisin...Creatures of Passage is that rare novel that dispenses ancestral wisdom and literary virtuosity in equal measure."
--Washington Post

"The novel is worthy of every Toni Morrison comparison it receives, effortlessly blending the brutalities of D.C.'s history with the mythical and supernatural. Creatures of Passage is a lyrical journey that will stick with you."
--NPR, a Best Book of 2021

"Creatures of Passage resists comparison. It's reminiscent of Beloved as well as the Odyssey, but perhaps its most apt progenitor is the genre of epic poems performed by the djelis of West Africa...All these otherwise clashing elements become, in this cast, a cohesive whole, telling us that this, too, is America."
--New York Times Book Review

"In its luminous prose, and its nods to mysticism and myth, the novel brings to mind the best of Toni Morrison. It's that good."
--Washington Post, One of the Best Books about Washington, DC, recommended by George Pelecanos

Nephthys Kinwell is a taxi driver of sorts in Washington, DC, ferrying passengers in a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere with a ghost in the trunk. Endless rides and alcohol help her manage her grief over the death of her twin brother, Osiris, who was murdered and dumped in the Anacostia River.

Unknown to Nephthys when the novel opens in 1977, her estranged great-nephew, ten-year-old Dash, is finding himself drawn to the banks of that very same river. It is there that Dash--reeling from having witnessed an act of molestation at his school, but still questioning what and who he saw--has charmed conversations with a mysterious figure he calls the "River Man."

When Dash arrives unexpectedly at Nephthys's door bearing a cryptic note about his unusual conversations with the River Man, Nephthys must face what frightens her most.

Morowa Yejidé's deeply captivating novel shows us an unseen Washington filled with otherworldly landscapes, flawed super-humans, and reluctant ghosts, and brings together a community intent on saving one young boy in order to reclaim itself.

Series: Class Mom (4)

From the author of Class Mom and You've Been Volunteered comes Laurie Gelman's next laugh-out-loud novel Smells Like Tween Spirit.

As a new Mat Mom of the Pioneer Middle School (PMS) Wrestling team, Jen Dixon finds herself thrown in the middle of the "guerrilla war against so-called perfect mothers," armed only with her cutting wit and acerbic sense of humor. (New York Times Book Review)

Handling a whole host of new challenges, from the dreaded seventh-grade science fair to a school fundraiser (again!), Jen faces the somewhat-terrifying new social dynamics of the wrestling moms with her trademark combination of reluctance and exceptional delivery.

Between school events and teaching spin classes, Jen finds herself fully immersed in sports mom competitiveness. These parents seem perfectly unassuming, until their kids start to wrestle, and they become raging pubescent monsters. Learning to navigate this new world while fielding calls from the principal because of Max's newfound misogynistic behavior, Jen steels herself for the indignities of middle-school life--with her loyal spin class attendees and her bossy four-year-old granddaughter giving her the strength she needs to press on.

Mix in a Parent Night, New Year's Party, and Valentine's Day Dance, and Jen Dixon certainly has her hands, and her calendar, full. And through it all, Jen continues to charm with her riotously funny quips and memorable one-liners.

Series: American Novels (8)

Walt Whitman and Louisa May Alcott meet the horrors of the Civil War as they minister to its casualties

After the Union Army’s defeat at Fredericksburg in 1862, Walt Whitman and Louisa May Alcott converge on Washington to nurse the sick, wounded, and dying. Whitman was a man of many contradictions: egocentric yet compassionate, impatient with religiosity yet moved by the spiritual in all humankind, bigoted yet soon to become known as the great poet of democracy. Alcott was an intense, intellectual, independent woman, an abolitionist and suffragist, who was compelled by financial circumstance to publish saccharine magazine stories yet would go on to write the enduring and beloved Little Women. As Lock captures the musicality of their unique voices and their encounters with luminaries ranging from Lincoln to battlefield photographer Mathew Brady to reformer Dorothea Dix, he deftly renders the war’s impact on their personal and artistic development.

Inspired by Whitman’s poem The Wound-Dresser and Alcott’s Hospital Sketches, the ninth stand-alone book in The American Novels series is a masterful dual portrait of two iconic authors who took different paths toward chronicling a country beset by prejudice and at war with itself.

“Gripping... Distinctive... A haunting novel that offers candid portraits of literary legends.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Lock captures the strong personalities of Whitman and Alcott without glossing over their flaws in this fascinating snapshot of history.” —Library Journal

Sean Whittlesea was there when his wife was murdered. He saw the light leave her eyes. He held her dead body in his arms.  He knows he wept, but he cannot recollect a single other detail. Tormented by the tragedy, Sean relives the horror over and over again. As he struggles to recall what really happened, his imagination serves up an endless chain of scenarios. The truth, however, remains hidden in the vault of his memory, and the key is nowhere to be found.

Nearly two decades later, Sean, now remarried and a father of two, wins a bizarre contest hosted by his eccentric boss. The prize is the Memory Palace, a state-of-the-art black box that purportedly allows its possessor to relive every moment he has ever experienced, playing out all the memories on a screen.

While the small machine at first appears to be the answer to the mystery surrounding the death of his wife, it instead upends Sean's life. He pushes his family further and further away as the Memory Palace forces him to confront harsh realities and difficult questions that he lacks the strength to face or answer. Spiraling downward, Sean encounters increasingly harrowing challenges that force him to realize that his memory is not the only thing at stake. Series: Love and Honor (1)

At least here she knows her work and life have meaning. But all that is thrown into chaos when she fails to save the life of a local warlord's mortally wounded son.

In Infinite Dimensions, her first collection after winning the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction for Please Come Back to Me, Jessica Treadway writes about the themes of fidelity, betrayal, and self-delusion as she portrays what William Faulkner called "the human heart in conflict with itself."

Following in the tradition of Elizabeth Strout and her own mentor, the late Andre Dubus, Treadway mines the internal landscapes of her characters with intimate insight as she shows them trying but often failing to live up to their own moral standards. A female bank executive with a history of psychiatric illness is forced to decide whether to hire her former hospital roommate, whom she fears will expose her past. A college student has to choose between his grandmother and his girlfriend. A recovering alcoholic faces the prospect of self-sabotage during a dinner meeting with an editor who can make or break her career. The stories are loosely linked by character, setting, and the motif of a talking sugar bowl that appears in the work of the Russian author Anya Chaykovskaya who is, in turn, one of Treadway's own fictional characters.

Hailed by The New York Times Book Review as "a writer with an unsparing bent for the truth," Treadway exhibits in her stories both a deft understanding of human psychology and mastery at depicting it in multiple, complex, and intriguing forms.

A guided group tour to concentration camps in Poland and Germany allows Stahl to confront personal and historical demons with both deep despair and savage humor

"Nein, Nein, Nein! is the unbelievable true story of a guided bus tour to Nazi concentration camps, told as only Jerry Stahl can tell it, with an acid wit as deadly serious as it is hilarious, insane, and weirdly life-affirming. The destinations he describes are real, but who else would dare to take us there? Stahl is fearless, gripping, and most unsparing about his own damned soul. I read everything he writes."
--Eric Bogosian, actor/playwright

"There's dark humor, and then there is Nein, Nein, Nein! Jerry Stahl manages a balancing act here that would put all the trapeze artists of the world to shame."
--Lucy Sante, author of Low Life

"A disturbing, funny, dark travelogue."
--Marc Maron

In September 2016, Jerry Stahl was feeling nervous on the eve of a two-week trip across Poland and Germany. But it was not just the stops at Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Dachau that gave him anxiety. It was the fact that he would be traveling with two dozen strangers, by bus. In a tour group. And he was not a tour-group kind of guy.

The decision to visit Holocaust-world did not come easy. Stahl's lifelong depression at an all-time high, his career and personal life at an all-time low, he had the idea to go on a trip where the despair he was feeling--out-of- control sadness, regret, and fear, not just for himself, but for the entire United States--would be appropriate. And where was despair more appropriate than the land of the Six Million?

Seamlessly weaving global and personal history, through the lens of Stahl's own bent perspective, Nein, Nein, Nein! stands out as a triumph of strange-o reporting, a tale that takes us from gang polkas to tour-rash to the truly disturbing snack bar at Auschwitz. Strap in for a raw, surreal, and redemptively hilarious trip. Get on the bus.

Compiled by New York Times bestselling author Andrew Bacevich and retired army officer Danny A. Sjursen, Paths of Dissent: Soldiers Speak Out Against America's Long War collects provocative essays from American military veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, offering firsthand testimony that illuminates why the Forever Wars lasted so long while producing so little of value.

In the wake of 9/11, the United States embarked upon a Global War on Terrorism aimed at using American military power to transform the Greater Middle East. Twenty years later, the ensuing forever wars have produced little tangible success while exacting enormous harm. In Iraq and Afghanistan, the United States has sustained tens of thousands of casualties while expending trillions of dollars and inflicting massive suffering on populations that we sought to "liberate."

In Washington and across the nation at large, the inclination to forget these wars and move on is palpable. In fact, there is much to be learned and those who served and fought in these wars are best positioned to teach. The first book of its kind since the Vietnam era, Paths of Dissent gathers original essays from American veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, drawn from all services, ranks, and walks of life, who have come out in opposition to these conflicts. Selected for their honesty and eloquence by fellow veterans Andrew Bacevich and Danny A. Sjursen, these outspoken critics describe not only their motivations for serving, but also for taking the path of dissent--disappointment and disillusionment; the dehumanizing impact of combat; the loss of comrades to friendly fire; the persistence of xenophobia and racism--all of these together exposing the mendacity that has pervaded the Global War on Terrorism from its very outset.

Combining diverse, critical perspectives with powerful personal testimony, Paths of Dissent sheds light on the myriad factors that have made America's post-9/11 wars costly and misguided exercises in futility.

Caribbean professor Lila Bonnard arrives in Vermont for a short-term teaching position and is forced to confront the terrible legacy of American (in)justice

"In Now Lila Knows, Elizabeth Nunez has crafted an indelible saga, one that is both of the times and timeless; both personal and universal. This beautifully, masterfully written novel is at once a compelling love story, a crucial exploration of the contemporary immigrant experience, and a trenchant critique of American racism."
--Mitchell S. Jackson, Pulitzer Prize winner, author of The Residue Years

"Timely and essential, Now Lila Knows is a luminous story of discovery and the consequencesof being Black in America."
--Bernice L. McFadden, author of The Book of Harlan

"Now Lila Knows is a tale of empathy that comes at the necessary cost, however delayed, of losing one's innocence, of trading it for a harsher, more urgent reality. By encircling the reader in what they might think they know--about America, about the Caribbean, and the spaces in between--Elizabeth Nunez challenges us to answer for ourselves not only what we know, but also what we are prepared to do. The magic of this novel is that it opens a window to Black life in America through the eyes of an immigrant. A must read."
--Kevin Adonis Browne, OCM Bocas Prize winner, author of High Mas

Lila Bonnard has left her island home in the Caribbean to join the faculty as a visiting professor at Mayfield College in a small Vermont town. On her way from the airport to Mayfield, Lila witnesses the fatal shooting of a Black man by the police. It turns out that the victim was a professor at Mayfield, and was giving CPR to a white woman who was on the verge of an opioid overdose.

The two Black faculty and a Black administrator in the otherwise all-white college expect Lila to be a witness in the case against the police. Unfortunately, Lila fears that in the current hostile political climate against immigrants of color she may jeopardize her position at the college by speaking out, and her fiancé advises her to remain neutral.

Now Lila Knows is a gripping story that explores our obligation to act when confronted with the unfair treatment of fellow human beings. A page-turner with universal resonance, this novel will leave readers rethinking the meaning of love and empathy.

Doctor Bernard Patten―erstwhile Memory Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, founder of the first memory clinic at the Neurological Institute of New York, and author of scientific papers on memory therapy and memory problems―wants to help you to a better mind, a better memory, and, consequently, a better life.

Memory degradation happens to everyone. Even people in good health forget where they park their cars or leave their reading glasses. Some draw a blank entering their PIN. Is the stove off? Cat fed? Door locked? Did you take your medication? Not sure? How come? These memory problems only get worse as we get older unless we employ mental exercises to improve memory now.

Mountains of scientific research prove that mental exercise benefits the brain as much as physical exercise benefits the body. Mental gymnastics boosts brainpower, augments memory, and (in some cases) actually increases brain size. It can help prevent dementia, mental decline, and the much-feared Alzheimer's disease.

Making Mental Might does not aim to increase your IQ or show you how to get smarter. It offers the proper mental training to look, sound, and perform worlds better. These techniques have helped hundreds of students at Rice University's School of Continuing Studies under Doctor Patten improve their working memory. They can do the same for you.

This poetic picture book tells a story about two young children and what's it like to be raised by their gay parents. They are delighted to share their tales about everyday life with their two mommies and two daddies.

With lively illustrations and fun, rhythmic text, we learn that having two parents of the same gender doesn't make a difference at all through the eyes of a child. The parents' love and tenderness they have for each other, their community, and their children are both palpable and relatable, reminding all of us that whether you are gay or straight, what matters most to a child is love, care, and attention.

This book makes the perfect addition to any household teaching the values of inclusion, equality, love, and good parenting!

Dickie Cornish, Washington, DC street denizen turned unlicensed private investigator, is forced at gunpoint to track down the daughter of an ex-con, setting up a chain of events that unleashes a war within the corrupt police force, exposes shocking conduct in child services, and unearths a secret that threatens to tear the nation’s capitol apart.

It’s been over year since that bleak Christmas when a rich man peeled homeless, drug-addled Dickie Cornish from a steam grate, cleaned him up, and convinced him to use his street connections to track down his missing property. Now, as the summer sun bakes those same mean streets, the air is thick with crime, contagion, and corruption. Dickie struggles with sobriety, anti-psychotic meds, and counseling at the VA, but manages to make a meager living as a private investigator with his sidekick, “Stripe”—until an ex-con named Al-Mayadeen Thomas sticks a gun to Dickie’s forehead and kidnaps him to a grim flophouse—a motel filled with squatters more desperate than the poor souls in the shelters.

Thomas demands that Dickie find his daughter, missing for years from the motel in a notorious cold case. The other squatters plead for him to find their vanished children as well. When Thomas takes his own life to seal Dickie’s help, Police Chief Linda Figgis hauls Dickie in and offers him a Faustian choice: she directs him to help her close the Thomas cold case, but only if he forgets about the other vanished and abused children. To his horror, Dickie finds himself in the middle of a war within the police, with either side closing in for the kill to keep the truth hidden.

The sequel to author Christopher Chambers' critically-acclaimed mystery Scavenger, Standalone has already received high praise. 2022 Sue Grafton Memorial Award winner Tracy Clark (author, the Cass Raines Chicago mystery series) proclaims, "Dickie Cornish works the gritty underbelly of DC, and it’s hard to decide who skirts the edges more, Dickie or our corrupt nation’s capital. Earthy, raw, all the way street, Standalone’s got a lot to say." And award-winning mystery author Gary Phillips (One-Shot Harry) raves, "Once again Chris Chambers weaves a mesmerizing and timely tale of twists and deceit with his most unique street level gumshoe Dickie Cornish at the center of it all. A well crafted page turner.”

God created us to be curious. We innately wonder about the world, one another, ourselves, and our Creator. But fear of the unknown, cultural taboos, technology, or even church leaders can smother our curiosity. Popular writer Lore Ferguson Wilbert has belonged to Christian communities that discouraged curiosity. The point of the Christian life was to have the right answers, and asking questions reflected a wavering faith. But Wilbert came to discover that the Bible is a permission slip to anyone who wants to ask questions. Reflecting her own theological trajectory toward a more contemplative, expansive faith, Wilbert invites readers to foster curiosity as a spiritual habit. This book explores questions God asks us, questions we ask God, and questions we ask each other. Christianity is not about knowing good answers, says Wilbert, but about asking good questions--ones that foster deeper intimacy with God and others. A Curious Faith invites readers to go beyond pat answers and embrace curiosity, rather than certainty, as a hallmark of authentic faith. Foreword by Seth Haines.

In his memoir, Moon in Full, Marpheen Chan recounts an emotional and modern day coming-of-age story that has roots in the Cambodian genocide and weaves through troubled familial relationships, housing projects, foster homes, churches, and college life, as well as rural Maine where he struggles to reconcile his fears and beliefs as a young gay man of color adopted into a white Evangelical family. He has continually struggled with his lost identity as a Cambodian and homophobia as a young gay man of color. As PTSD, poverty, abuse, and addiction took their toll on his mother, Chann and his siblings were removed and placed into foster care. And that is where his journey into adulthood truly begins.

With compassion and honesty, Chann recalls what he has learned, what he has found and what he has lost in his evolution from rebel boy to holy-roller youth to advocate for equality and civil rights, all in one of the nation's oldest and least diverse states; but a state that he proudly calls home. Chann's story shines a spotlight on the search for truth, compassion, and the struggles of our complicated era.

A pilgrimage-turned-adventure story in pursuit of a pagan mystery on the Camino de Santiago across France and Spain!

"In Beebe Bahrami's The Way of the Wild Goose, a mystery, the wild feminine, and trail magic come together on the Camino de Santiago... Bahrami affirms that the Camino is more than a mere road—it's an initiation. With skill and insight, she details the joys, challenges, and human kindness she experienced on this 'great leyline forged from the mix of natural earth energies with the human imagination' that became her road to self-discovery and a heart-centered life." —Foreword Reviews; starred review

With three pilgrimages across southern France and northern Spain defining author and anthropologist Beebe Bahrami's single journey on the Camino de Santiago, The Way of the Wild Goose recounts an inner and outer journey full of wild nature, ancient roads and history, quirky pilgrims, wise and humorous locals, and mysterious folklore. It's a compelling tale of quest, initiation, and transformation following the Way of Saint James.

The book is also a detective story that reveals an old mystery: Why is the goose associated with the medieval Camino de Santiago, and how did it come to preserve a whole universe of pagan, pre-Christian lore in one innocent symbol? Longtime trekker Bahrami decided to find out, and unknowingly catapulted herself into a true wild goose chase, unearthing a magnetically alive and meaningful long walk on the ancient roads in France and Spain--and a journey into the Self.

Loving our children's children well is an art--one we keep learning as they grow.

Making memories and fostering relationships with our grandchildren in the midst of a fast-moving culture isn't easy, and a legacy that lasts isn't crafted overnight. So how do we as grandparents cultivate strong, meaningful relationships with the children we adore?

Start with The Mindful Grandparent. With twelve grandchildren between them, authors and educators Marilyn McEntyre and Shirley Showalter know deep in their bones that attending to the small ones in our lives has never been more important. Grandparents can help little ones learn to value relationships over things, lap time over screen time. They can help grandchildren live with intention, attentive to others, to nature, and to the diverse, beautiful, and troubled social world around them.

The Mindful Grandparent doesn't shy away from the challenging issues in contemporary grandparenting. Through inspired ideas teamed with simple practices and engaging stories,The Mindful Grandparent covers wide-ranging topics such as cultivating curiosity, giving meaningful gifts, helping children explore difficult topics, building a grandparent team, honoring adult children's boundaries, and managing technology.

Let The Mindful Grandparent be your guide and source of refuge for the sacred and sometimes bewildering work of grandparenting.

TRIBE FOREVER

Sins of the Tribe, by first-time author Mark A. Salter, explores the impact of intense tribalism and its resulting dehumanization in a setting that's popular, wildly flawed, and hiding in plain sight: college football. Wally Hestia is on top of the world when he becomes a member of the Bastille University Tribe football team, a six-time national champion powerhouse with a pristine reputation and a nationwide following. But he's only on the team as the holder for his mentally deficient brother, Henry, a kicking prodigy and the person who gives Wally purpose. But over time, Wally sees morality trampled for the larger cause of tribal dominance. When Wally finds himself in opposition to Bastille to the point where he and Henry are in danger, he must choose between the adulation of the larger tribe or embrace the idyllic virtues Bastille had draped itself in, even if it means losing everything.

Sins of the Tribe explores these hard truths: morality is subordinate to tribalism and the need for domination through violent proxies is real. Sins of the Tribe will appeal to football fans as well as fans of fiction.

The story of a woman who committed a major crime against the military government in Argentina during the Dirty War in the 1970s.

After twenty-five years she still feels guilty for what she did, and since it led to the deaths of other people, including the father of her child, she's unable to forgive herself. She's living in New York City now, and as she's leaving for work one morning she confronts a young man standing on the sidewalk in front of her apartment building who addresses her with the alias she used in her crime. She is startled by the encounter, especially since the guy speaks English with the accent of someone from Argentina, but she recovers enough to deny that she's the person he thinks she is, and she walks away, wondering if he's an Argentine police agent who has managed to track her and finally find her. She can get away from him during the day, but he knows where she lives, and she can expect him to be waiting outside her building that evening when she goes home.

So what does this guy want from her? Does he want to arrest her and take her back to Argentina where she will be justly punished for her crime? Does he want revenge? She can only imagine, and she can't ask for police protection because if she does, it will all come out: what she did in Argentina and its fatal consequences. Although it was dormant, her feeling of guilt was always alive in the bottom of her heart, and now it has been aroused by a guy identifying her as the woman who played a key role in the kidnapping of an army colonel so many years ago.

Marriage and midlife can be difficult. But when you add a controlling, manipulative and self-absorbed mother-in-law into the mix, things can get worse—much worse. Toxic even.

When Allison Montgomery's beloved father-in-law and long-time confidant passes away, her mother-in-law, Margaret, 'temporarily' moves in. From rearranging the furniture and taking over the kitchen, to undermining and embarrassing Allie at every turn, including funding her daughter's escape, throwing a hissy fit at the mall, and publicly equating Allie's glass of Chardonnay to full blown alcoholism, Margaret turns Allie's life upside down causing her to bounce between a sincere desire to support her grieving mother-in-law and an intense urge to simply push her out of the nearest window. Feeling annoyed, trapped and even a little childish, Allie struggles to avoid a complete meltdown with help from her fearless and audacious best friend, a plan for reinventing herself and enjoying a second act, and, yes, a few glasses of Chardonnay. Along the way, Allie discovers the reasons behind Margaret's attitude toward her all these years. Does it help? Maybe…

International chef Jake Hardy has it all. Celebrity, thriving career, plenty of friends, a happy family and faithful dog. Until one day when a tragic accident tears it all apart. Struggling to recover, Hardy finds himself in a strange new world--a snow-swept prairie town that time forgot--a place where nothing makes sense. Cold is beautiful. Simple is complex. And doubts begin to surface about whether Jake's tragedy was truly an accident after all.

As the sun sets in the Land of Living Skies, Hardy and his glamourous, seventy-eight-year-old transgender neighbour find themselves ensnared in multiple murders separated by decades. In Bidulka's "love letter to life on the prairies" he delivers a story of grief and loss that manages to burst with joy, tenderness and hope. Redolent of his earlier works, Going to Beautiful brings us unexpected, under-represented characters in settings that immediately feel familiar and beloved. Beautiful--a place where what you need may not be what you were looking for.

Llwddawanden is a hidden sanctuary where remnants of a once-powerful pagan cult carry on their ancient ritual practices, supported by a small but faithful following of servants, craftsmen, and laborers.

Cut off from the outside world by both geography and conviction, the Druids of Llwddawanden continue to venerate the Great Mother Goddess and to view themselves as the first-born and favorite of Her mortal children. While the belief that the most important of all divine beings gave birth to their ancestors and that Her spirit inhabits the body of their highest priestess is a tenuous conclusion in view of their reduced lot in life, the Druids of Llwddawanden believe it and are, for the most part, committed to carrying on the traditions handed down to them by their forbears.

Herrwn, the shrine's chief priest and master bard, has the responsibility of overseeing the education of Caelym, the orphaned son of the cult's previous chief priestess, as well as keeping the peace within the upper ranks of their order--two tasks that grow more difficult as the rivalry over which of the three highest priests will claim Caelym as his disciple grows, and as mounting conflicts between the current chief priestess and her only living daughter threaten to rend the fabric of a society that has endured for more than a millennium.

Stuffed with never-before-seen photography, stories, and race results, Bronco Racing: Ford's Legendary 4x4 in Off-Road Competition is the most definitive publication ever on this marque's racing success!

In 1965, legendary builder and off-road aficionado Bill Stroppe was one of the first to test the new Bronco in off-road conditions. In March 1966, Stroppe introduced his racing Bronco to the press at the Bronco Roundup, where racing ace Ray Harvick pounded the Santa Ana river bottom with his tuned machine to win Top Eliminator at the Four-Wheel-Drive Grand Prix at Riverside, and the rest is history.

Ford's Bronco dominated the off-road racing scene and captured coveted titles in the Mint 400, Baja 500 and dirt racing's crowning achievement: the Mexican 1000/Baja 1000. As the first-generation Bronco gave way to the second-generation machine (1978), racing Broncos continued to devour the competition until Ford pulled the plug on the rig in 1996.

Complementing the legendary Broncos featured here, you will also hear the tales of their wranglers, including Parnelli Jones, Rod Hall, Larry Minor, Shelby Hall, James Garner, Don Barlow, James Duff, Bill Rush, and the aforementioned Ray Harvick and Bill Stroppe. The infamous mounts covered include Big Oly/Crazy Colt, Pony, Big Hoss, Crazy Horse, Stove, and Colt.

Diligently penned by Bronco racing historian John Elkin, this book is the most comprehensive collection of historical accuracy ever authored on this subject. Pull your belts tight and wipe your goggles clean one last time with Bronco Racing: Ford's Legendary 4x4 in Off-Road Competition!

Learn everything there is to know about how to install a versatile and capable air ride system.

Air suspension used to be expensive, difficult to install, and complex to figure out. But that was years ago. Today, thanks to kits made for virtually every make and model of car and truck, plus the popularization of automatic digital levelling kits, it's easier than ever to take a vehicle and put it on the ground. With a properly installed air ride suspension, you can set your height wherever you like, lay your ride on the asphalt when you want, and even tear through the corners like you're driving a slot car. But here's the most important part: it's just cool.

Having an air-bagged vehicle isn't restricted to one vehicle class or another. While it originally became popular with mini trucks, it soon caught on with street rods, cars, and motorcycles, and even traditional lowriders have embraced the scene. That's because where previous adjustable suspensions had their problems, air ride setups are quite often cleaner and easier to maintain. It all depends on how it's installed and managed.

In How to Install Air Ride Suspension Systems, air ride veteran Kevin Whipps walks you through everything you need to know about installing an air suspension onto pretty much anything. After going through the basics of each component, he explains how it all works together in easy-to-understand terms that make it simple for even the mechanically challenged. By the end of it all, you'll know more about air suspension than you thought was possible and have a clear understanding of what you need to do to bag your ride.

Advance Praise:

A provocative, unsettling, and deeply affecting read with rich stories interspersed with the piercing clarity of the poems. Not a book to be read straight through from cover to cover—one needs to allow some reflection time for many of the pieces to settle in the heart and mind.

It’s a bad night not to have wheels. Stranded in the rain, pacing the sidewalk, Jack gradually confronts the events that led him there and just how far off-track he’s gotten. A former firefighter now involved in more questionable pursuits, he views his present with trepidation and his past with regret. Memories of the men and women who once cared for him are the company he keeps, but with each passing reminiscence, Jack inevitably reaches the point in the story where the relationship went wrong. For a while, he’s able to avoid thinking about the worst thing that’s happened, but he won’t to be able to keep it from himself forever.

Would you destroy your best friend to save your husband... if he's done the unspeakable?

Ginger Mallowan embodies everything the 1980s stand for, from big hair to power suits to "Material Girl"... until her son disappears during a beach walk one night. That's the moment girls don't want to have fun anymore, and the moment she starts hunting for answers.

Now Ginger's hair is a bit flatter, her power suits packed into the attic, and her dance steps to Madonna lack the energy of better days. She hasn't found—or forgotten—her missing son, and she's only survived the grief thanks to her neighbor and keeper of secrets, Tara Christie.

Except for Ginger's darkest secret of all... about what happened the night her son disappeared.

But that vow of friendship is tested when Tara is jarred awake one night by a scream coming from next-door, where she finds Ginger standing over a dead body. Even stranger, Tara's husband is nowhere to be found.

As the investigation shakes the town to its core, and Tara's husband is charged with the murder, Tara must choose between proving her husband's innocence or protecting Ginger's past.

Little does she know they're about to stumble down a twisty path that could destroy them all.

Nora struggled with work-life balance even before an immortal sorcerer showed up and turned her career-and her love life, upside down.

Historian Nora Zvezda is gunning for a promotion at The Chicago Field Museum. The discovery of two ancient Greek weapons unlike any she's seen before might be her big break-but the artifacts are more than they seem.

Trying to uncover their secrets, Nora enlists the help of professor of ancient languages, Dr. Adam Scott, an undeniably handsome man of intrigue. Nora has been too busy to worry about romance, but Adam seems to be overflowing with charm-and secrets, the biggest being his rank among the Eteria, a secret society of powerful sorcerers who've been in hiding since the days of the Greek empire.

When Nora's work with the ancient and mystical weapons draws the attention of the Shadow, a powerful force that feeds off fear and negative emotions, she finds herself thrust in the middle of a perilous, age-old war between good and evil.

To protect herself, she must join the Eteria in their fight, all while struggling not to sacrifice the life she's worked so hard for. Complicating things further is her undeniable desire for Adam and the feeling that he may be hiding more than his status as an immortal sorcerer.

“A powerhouse scribe of the strange… Couturier writes with an elegance and grace reminiscent of Barker’s, bathed in beauty and blood, but very much with his own voice. It’s strange, it’s weird, it’s fascinating, and it will not let you go from first word to last. His command of prose captivates and is unequaled. I can’t get enough of his work. It’s that good.”

—Chris Miller, author of Dust and Shattered Skies

“This is a book of transformations, where victim and victor shift roles at the turn of a twisted tale. From abjection and depravity to wistful, unfulfilled love, Couturier guides us through the realm of appetite, and what it turns us into. Body horror, science fiction, and the paranormal are lenses through which he shows us the unforgiving food chain we participate in. Open this box and partake in its implacable calculus.”—Jayaprakash Satyamurthy, author of Come Tomorrow and Strength of Water

“What a dark treat you have in store! Scott combines a deft use of arcane language and incisive character creation, with a truly unusual and outré imagination.... There’s a sense that, through the characters with whom he peoples these stories, one is apprehending merely ‘the frayed edges of a wider world,’ to quote the screenwriter Travis Beacham. Many of the tales in in The Box hint at further vistas to be explored; even more horrifying and bizarre truths to be revealed. I will eagerly await them.”—Phil Breach, author of The Arte Mephitic and North

“Couturier’s “The Box and Others” is, by turns, compellingly strange and weirdly grotesque. The compulsion to keep reading after the first page, after the tenth, after the hundredth, is undeniable. With every new story, a new horror—sometimes human, sometimes cosmic, often both—is unveiled. Whether they be oppressive political regimes, eco-collapse, sexual malaise, the darkness of a psychotic ego, or a terror from beyond the stars, Couturier enthusiastically dredges up our individual and collective fears, giving them forms and names (or un-names) that will haunt the reader long after the cover has been closed.”—Rebecca Buchanan, author of Asphalt Gods and Not a Princess, But (Yes) There Was a Pea & Other Fairy Tales to Foment Revolution

“Take a bit of the weird and mix it with a hefty dash of arabesque, with notes of Algernon Blackwood, and you have The Box. Brilliant.”—M Ennenbach, poet, author of Hunger on the Chisholm Trail and (Un)tethered

“A collection of weird tales worthy of the original Weird Tales, a book to put on your shelf next to your battered Clark Ashton Smiths, “The Box and Others” is a kaleidoscopic study in contrasts—wonderfully nostalgic but always forward-looking, terrifying, gloriously inventive, and grimly funny. More than anything, it’s a showcase for Couturier’s near-boundless imagination. Here are the long-dead sorcerers, the obsessed archaeologists, the reluctant explorers of the abyssal depths, but set in and around the heathen temples of modern society: the late night truck stops, the spooky recycling centers, the broke-down carnivals and cramped apartments of the modern age. These sixteen twisted tales go down smooth, like fine vintage wine, but reimagined for the modern age and told with such robust, wicked glee you can’t help but marvel at Couturier’s enthusiasm and remarkably deft touch. Highly recommended.”—Polly Schattel, author of The Occultists and Shadowdays

In the desolate woods of northern Wisconsin, there is a cabin. Inside the cabin is a figure of evil, a witch performing an unknown ritual. There is also a young boy, Ryan Amherst, who is part of this strange ceremony: a pattern of sacrifice and resurrection known only to the residents of the tiny town of Grange.

Nearby in the village, a man named Nathan Amherst - Ryan’s father - meets with a middleman named John Linden. Nathan asks when his side of the “contract” will be fulfilled. John can only assure Nathan that he will be compensated for his troubles.

Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, a police officer named Ben Dmitrovich has a tense confrontation with his superiors. After beating a suspect in a domestic violence case, Ben is placed on a mandatory suspension - another in a long line of heinous police scandals. Ben, who is struggling to overcome his own personal demons, decides to retreat to his family’s cabin up north.

By coincidence or a morbid twist of fate, he ends up in Grange and meets a woman named Maria Amherst - Nathan’s wife, who apparently died seven months ago. As he unlocks the mystery of Maria’s reappearance, Ben discovers a shocking pattern of child disappearances and strange resurrections. A young piano prodigy named Amy Dorian may be the town’s next victim, but Ben races to rescue her before it’s too late. No. This wasn't an unfortunate accident. This was a homicide that had been staged to look like an accident. And now it was up to Mac to fit together the pieces of the puzzle that would lead him to the killer so that he could find justice for Loretta.

In the waning days of World War I, William K. Dean was brutally murdered, his body hog-tied and dumped in a rainwater cistern on his farm in the quiet town of Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Suspicion quickly fell on Dean's wife, an invalid in the early stages of dementia. Her friends, outraged at the accusations, pointed instead to a former tenant of Dean's, whom many suspected of being a German spy. Others believed that Dean's best friend, a politically powerful banker and judge, was involved.

Deep Water is based on extensive research into the Dean murder, including thousands of pages of FBI documents, Grand Jury testimonies, newspaper accounts, private correspondence, and the archives of the Jaffrey Historical Society.

There is so much to write about the French.

Because they invented cinemas, bicycles, cars, photography, radioactivity, but also the bra, the croque-monsieur, the garbage can, and dentures.

Because the French express themselves in a language qualified as one of the sexiest, albeit with sounds so often considered animalistic: coucou, quoi, oui….

Because in France, we intrinsically like to rebel against everything: system, government, our employer, and we go so far as to go on strike preventively against a law that does not yet exist.

A country where artists transform urinals into works of art, build a glass pyramid in front of a century-old building, or split the sky of their capital with a steel tower.

A country seen as the country of love and where the words “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ?” are the most pronounced by foreigners.

I’ll take you on a virtual excursion to France in order to verify the veracity of its many clichés and stereotypes.

I offer you a global reflection on the French lifestyle, which is so singular, atypical, and surprising.

I will transport you into the heart of an expatriated Gallic who makes fun of his country as much as he loves it.

Bon voyage to France!

The Last Five Minutes of a Storm is a short story collection packed full of defiance, grief, connection, power and, of course, a dash of strangeness. With strong magical realism influences, this collection features a host of new and emerging writers tackling the question of what it means to face a storm head on!

"Filled with moment after moment of wonder, drama, intrigue, and grace. The stories are perfectly chosen; realism and fantasy, the quotidian and the singular clashing and complementing and ultimately comprising the most satisfying of experiences... works of extraordinary beauty." – Donal Ryan, award-winning, twice Booker-longlisted author of Strange Flowers

"A stunning collection of writings, full of beauty, power and skill, and the new truths we need to be reading." – Joseph O'Connor, bestselling author of 2019 Irish Novel of the Year Shadowplay.

Detective Inspector Inga Larsson is one of the first on the scene of the death of a local woman discovered at home in Lincoln by her ten-year-old daughter.

The victim, Alyson Allsop, had taken out a series of injunctions in spiteful attempts to stop her ex-husband from having any contact with their daughter.

Is murder by the husband too obvious, too simplistic?

As if all that is not enough to contend with, it is pointed out to Larsson how the local media have suddenly highlighted the anniversary of the unsolved murder of disabled student Donna Steyning, strangled back in 2010.

Life in the Max is drawn from over 32 years as a prison officer. Serving at one of only six category A, maximum security prisons in England.

January 1988, a new recruit in Her Majesty’s Prison Service. The highs and lows of a career that many will find funny, shocking, sad, eye opening and thought provoking. Terrorism to tea making. Quoting real life events to illustrate a point. My relationships with both staff and prisoners are openly explored over the pages, some appear regularly as the story progresses. I have had good and bad dealings with many infamous prisoners in high security, they are all laid to bear here. No names have been changed, nothing is invented or dramatized. These events all happened during my time in the ‘Big House’.

Jude and Mercedez have kept deadly secrets from each other.

Jackson's suicide haunts Jude. She burned all evidence of her brother's depravity. One less monster in the world, right? Tech-savvy Mercedez is the last living witness to a teenage amateur horror film that ended with a gruesome death. She never told.

A viral video (thanks, Whiskers) brings internet fame—forcing flip-phone wielding Jude to choose between her job as the second female in the VP motorcycle motorcade or her mixologist hobby.

Global visibility brings naked vulnerability—someone has subscribed to Jude's channel.

Missing neighbors found dead in side-by-side freezers, viral drunk “I quit” videos, spammed porn magazine subscriptions, snail mail severed fingers, sabotaged cave trips, cryptic social media comments, and stalking photos push the codependent friends over the edge (literally, off the side of a bluff) when best friends find out that secrets can kill.

When German-born Louis Pfeif leaves home to join the Fifty-Eighth Illinois Infantry Regiment in 1862, his dog accompanies him. At Chicago's Camp Douglas, Bärchen charms Louis's fellow officers—even Colonel Lynch. As the Civil War escalates, the unit is transferred to Tennessee and placed under the command of General Lew Wallace. Shortly afterward, they come under fire at Erin Hollow. Bärchen proves his mettle—remaining by Louis's side amid the boom of cannon and the rattle of musketry. Then one morning the two are thrust onto a battlefield, where one will die and the other must learn to carry on.

Based on a true story and the history of the Fifty-Eighth Illinois, The Faithful Dog powerfully illustrates the unwavering bond of devotion between dogs and their humans.

Recreate the mind that made you happy as a child.

As children, we were often so happy because it was easy for us to enter the playful mind. The “playful mind” is the mentality of being receptive to engagement with the present moment. As we got older, this playful mind became interfered with, making it more difficult for us to enter this mental state. If we are not mentally receptive to the present moment, it becomes harder for us to engage with it and produce feelings of happiness.

In this book, Paul Daniel identifies what is interfering with the playful mind and how to remove them.

Primarily, there are mental frameworks we’ve adopted growing up that inhibit our satisfaction and cause us suffering. Such mental frameworks today preoccupy our thoughts and keep us from engaging with what is happening right in front of us. By dismantling these mental frameworks and removing other sources of interference, we can more easily enter the playful mind again – even as adults. With easier access to the playful mind, you will be able to experience more happiness in each moment.

"I don't know if this is a confession or a purge, a scream or a lullaby," begins twenty-seven-year-old Owen Kilroy's journal, in which he writes about the remarkable women--friends and lovers--who've come and gone and who have shaped his life, as well as the many varieties of heartbreak he's experienced.

Owen revisits himself as a seventeen-year-old guitar player, songwriter, and drug dealer in a small, fictional California desert town. He relives being arrested, violently, by half the town's police force and sent to juvenile prison. He faces the pain of being disowned by his mother and having his father disappear. And he re-experiences inadvertently killing his girlfriend by providing her with drugs.

After escaping from juvenile prison, ending up broke, desperate, and homeless in Venice Beach, he eventually meets Kiera, a nineteen-year-old Irish student at UCLA. She is the great love of his life, a love that he knows would cripple him if he were to lose her. Now, ten years later, Owen discovers that writing about her and all that came before isn't enough. If he is to move on, he realizes he must go back to California and face his ghosts directly.

Despite Zack's successes, he is deeply resentful of the world he lives in and wants out of his "normal" life. As his cynicism grows, his harrowing plan takes shape and he is thrown to his fate. Through a thrilling journey, the reader learns how previous generations propelled Zack into the life he was destined to lead, without his knowledge or control. PI Steve Rockfish's father loses part of his retirement savings in an online romance scam while partner Jawnie McGee handles the firm's newest client who spins a tale of alleged spousal infidelity. Rockfish ignores his current case load and becomes fixated on tracking down those responsible for the fraud. Restitution is coming in the form of cash or broken bones. At the same time, Jawnie's surveillance of the cheating spouse reveals more acts of kindness than sex leading to a client who doesn't want to believe the good news.

Unbeknownst to the partners, each investigative path leads the partners to the Church of the Universal Nurturing II where the fraud is on a cryptocurrency level. Their new SunCoin is marketed as the only post-rapture currency accepted inside the pearly gates. After all, who wants to show up to the after party with out-turned pockets and not get past Heaven's paywall?

Church elders court Rockfish and his new-found Hollywood wealth with an old-fashioned honey pot. The danger level ratchets up as Rockfish counters by sending the firm's two new confidential informants undercover only to find the church's endgame grift is larger and deadlier than anyone expected.

Eighteen-year-old Serena is attending university on the west coast when her life is flipped upside down. With the untimely death of her parents, Serena returns to New York City to care for her seven-year-old brother, Jack. As financial pressures mound, Serena makes the difficult decision of moving them to their heritage lake house in Upstate.
Jack hasn’t spoken since their parent’s death and Serena’s only focus is learning how to become a full-time mother to her little brother with the hope that she can save him from his sorrow. But when the siblings arrive in the isolated town of Korwin Grove, they realize their family’s name raises eyebrows from the townsfolk as the two settle into the Korwin abandoned lake home.

The word witch is whispered in the air whenever the locals see Serena and it doesn’t take long for the siblings to discover that things inside the gothic house are not what they appear to be. The more Serena discovers about the townsfolk, the more she questions everyone’s motives. Including her new crush on a girl named Ashton who just happened to appear in time to rescue Serena from a dark and looming presence within the house. An ancient witch has cursed Conjure Lake and if they stay in Korwin Cottage, they may never make it out alive.

Can Serena trust her feelings for the good-looking and confident Ashton or should she keep her wall up and rely on her newfound witch abilities to save herself and her brother Jack from Alice Lake?

Conjure Lake is a story that will make you question everything you’ve ever been told about ghosts.

What if you set out to travel the world and got sidetracked in a Himalayan sewing workshop? What if that sidetrack turned out to be your life's path--your way home?

Part art book, part memoir, part spiritual travelogue, Threads of Awakening is a delightful and inspiring blend of adventure and introspection. Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo shares her experience as a California woman traveling to the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile in India to manage an economic development fund, only to wind up sewing pictures of Buddha instead. Through her remarkable journey, she discovered that a path is made by walking it--and that some of the best paths are made by walking off course.

For over 500 years, Tibetans have been creating sacred images from pieces of silk. Much rarer than paintings and sculptures, these stitched fabric thangkas are among Tibet's finest artworks. Leslie studied this little-known textile art with two of its brightest living masters and let herself discover where curiosity and devotion can lead. In this book, she reveals the unique stitches of an ancient needlework tradition, introduces the Buddhist deities it depicts, and shares insights into the compassion, interdependence, and possibility they embody.

By the time she was in high school, her dad was in prison for smuggling 12,000 pounds of marijuana. There, John made a connection with a powerful Colombian drug lord. If you know the song, you know Brandy's sailor loved the sea more than her (The bastard). Brandy, You're a Fine Girl is historical fan fiction, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1972 hit song. Brandy's story doesn't end when the music stops—her destiny is filled with adventure!

Crum, England, mid-1800s: "Brandy," he told me, "you're a fine girl," he said. "You'd make a good wife." Barmaid Brandy seizes on a plan to become that good wife and escape her life of drudgery. A pregnancy would be just the thing to get him to marry her. When that doesn't work, she crosses paths with Elliot, a nobleman in need of a wife and heir by his fast-approaching 30th birthday, or else his inheritance will go to his scheming cousin Clarence.Once married, Elliot's problems appear solved, and Brandy has a kind husband and a warm and comfy new home, even if it is full of Elliot's odd band of friends.

Everyone tries to get along and put up with Brandy's strange cravings and profanity-laden drama, until they discover she was never really pregnant. She fears she'll be kicked out, but not to worry--there's still time for Elliot to fulfill his husbandly duty and save the day. Or is he... up to the task? When Elliot's handsome -- and virile -- best friend Beau shows up, Brandy promptly falls head over heels. She becomes pregnant, but will it be too late? Swearing she can live on love, Brandy dreams of running off with Beau, until she discovers a shocking secret about her husband and his best friend. Will the baby arrive before Elliot's 30th birthday? Will it even be a son and therefore true heir? And who is the mysterious one-armed carpenter from Brandy's past? Fear not -- Brandy always has a back-up plan. From the tarnished silver locket (that turned her neck green, but may hold a pirate's map), to a secret passageway containing hidden treasure, Brandy is determined to get by on her wits and her tits.

The #1 hit song, Brandy, You're a Fine Girl, was written and composed by Elliot Lurie and recorded by his band, Looking Glass. Dee DeTarsio is an award-winning writer living in southern California. She hopes Elliot Lurie enjoys Brandy living her best life and enjoying fine adventures!

They tried to kill the ugliness, but they only made it stronger.

The icecaps melted and the water consumed the shorelines, but New York City still stands. All four boroughs prosper thousands of feet over the old metropolis hastily protected by walls. Proper citizens live above in a beautiful, protective dome on concrete stilts and criminals serve life below in the polluted, walled ghost of a city.

Richard Smith, a street-sweeper, enjoyed life in NYC with his wife until their deformed, life-supported child is medically terminated at birth by the government, pulling Richard’s soul into darkness.

When he receives a distressing message from a group known as Right-To-Life, Richard sinks lower. His child and many others may be alive and living with the criminals below in old New York. He needs to find his son and there is only one way possible to confirm if it’s true.

What he finds may be more than what society above can fathom.

A tense, wild ride of a sci-fi dystopian novel from the author of the Blunt Force Kharma series.

Detroit homicide detective Jacob Miller has been accused of many things, but being smart isn't one of them. The murder of drug dealer Willy is proof enough of that, but not covering it up is even worse. So why would he think that stealing a fellow inmate's hidden fortune is any smarter, especially when an ex-mafia family head is after the same thing?

But even the stupidest people have occasional flashes of brilliance, and Jacob is no exception. After being released from prison and moving to sunny Costa Rica, he solves an international murder mystery involving the usual suspects: love, lust, and murder.

Despite that mildly brainiac feather in his cap, he still has to deal with the beef between him, his fellow inmate, and the mob boss... and the violent fallout that ensues.

When a golden opportunity to escape does come along, a revealed truth and a purpose greater than himself changes everything.

An unusual and intriguing story

Hanna is a beautiful Scandinavian academic who finds herself subtly approached to compromise her integrity to facilitate a life changing promotion for her career driven husband.

From that point on, nothing can be the same. Whatever decision she makes, even if she makes no response at all, by virtue of the proposal being made, consequences are inevitable.

What would you do?

See it through her eyes and experience it through her mind as she makes her choices and the wheels of fate are set in motion. It is an unusual story of loyalty, of betrayal, and of love in its different forms. It is atmospheric and sensuous and with an ending you would not have foreseen.

In his most famous Sermon, Jesus announces a Kingdom so counterintuitive that it appears upside down in contrast to conventional wisdom. By prescribing both a revolutionary personal piety and a radical social possibility he teaches us how to become better people who in turn make the world better. His vision for a countercultural Kingdom challenges our engagement with contemporary culture morally, socially, and even politically. The impact of this Kingdom "on the earth as it is in heaven," with a view to partnering with Jesus in his venture to nudge the world toward its intended design is the focus of this compelling treatment of the Sermon. By a lifestyle of holy nonconformity shaped by the "Blessed Attitudes" (Beatitudes), Jesus commissions his prophetic community to embody a social alternative that the world cannot imagine on its own and to foment a humble and loving cultural shift where the privileged and powerless flourish together in peace and justice. As previews of the coming attractions when Christ will return and reign as King over a new heaven and earth, Kingdom citizens work toward initiating such a world on earth as it is in heaven today.

Climate change is happening now, and 2030 is around the corner. Can we make it on time? We have well-understood tipping points that, should we cross, will mean irreversible effects to our planet and we are hurtling towards them at frightening speed. Time is running out on our climate clock, a few minutes to midnight before these tipping points are reached.

We missed the starting gun in this race to avert global disaster and over the last few decades have procrastinated, but we've made some progress. The question is, can we truly escape what lies ahead for us after the climate clock strikes midnight?

This book is a simple explanation of what is climate change? How did we get here? What will happen if left unchecked? What can we do to "escape the other side of midnight."

Lynn Walker watched her dad, John, deteriorate from Miami undercover narcotics agent to drug smuggler, from protective father to monster—a very charming monster. By the time she was in high school, her dad was in prison for smuggling 12,000 pounds of marijuana. There, John made a connection with a powerful Colombian drug lord. Within months of being paroled, John waltzed back into his kids' lives, dishing out pure, Colombian cocaine to Lynn and launching her brother's coke-dealing career. After a few years of abusing coke together, Lynn lost everything and was forced to choose between her life and her father.

Jaw-dropping, emotionally raw and heart-breaking, Midnight Calling: A Memoir of a Drug Smuggler’s Daughter is a story about family bonds, addiction and the price of holding on when it’s time to let go.

Series: On Broadway (2)

Cady Cameron had a bad year. The blind date with her brother’s best friend—her teenage crush—Jake Longley, ended abruptly the moment Jake figured out who she was. Her Broadway debut hit a bad note when she told her castmate she had feelings for him, and he chose someone else. Cady forces herself to pick up the pieces of her life, finding a job as the standby for Broadway’s biggest diva and trying to ignore Jake’s constant presence in the apartment she shares with her brother. But his constant charm and his encouragement of her career make him awfully hard to keep away from…

Jake Longley is known as the “Bad Boy of Broadway.” He’s figured out that women love him and leave him, so there’s no need for him to get himself into a relationship. When his best friend sets him up with his little sister, Jake is so taken aback, he runs away before he can hurt her. When his best friend forces him and Cady to join forces for a romantic duet at a concert, Jake starts to see meek Cady in a new light. She has a voice that would shake a Broadway theater, and Jake takes it as his solemn responsibility to make her see just how talented she is.

One song becomes a friendship that might slowly burn its way to a flame, if Cady and Jake can learn to trust themselves offstage just as much as they do onstage.

Imagine if your life was spent at the mercy of coincidence…

A missing multi-million-pound painting, an insistent ex who won’t take no for an answer, and a ruthless media Baron who always gets his way. What could possibly go right?

Serial life avoider and semi-professional layabout, Jim Riven, is not particularly good at anything, unless lying in bed all day, ignoring his front door and his phone, and then going down the pub every evening, could be described as a life skill. But Jim Riven did have one particular talent—or what he referred to as ‘his curse’—that involved unnecessary and unwanted coincidences, or ‘not so serendipitous happenchances’ as he also liked to call them. Happenchances that had dogged his life ever since he could remember.

When Jim Riven’s ex-girlfriend, a rather spoilt society girl and daughter of all round international media rogue, Roo Osbourne, turns up unexpectedly one morning to elicit his help in finding a stolen painting by the grandfather of modern art, Piet Mondrian, Jim Riven’s life is turned upside down. And, for Jim Riven, upside down was not the right way up at all.

And so started a series of the most startling coincidences, placing him at the centre of a fascinating and complex mystery.

• Offer tools to better assess plans and the planning assumptions behind them.

• Support the reader to achieve his or her highest potential and, more importantly, be better equipped to succeed and make a positive impact in the world.

Until The Cold Is Gentle is an emotionally raw debut poetry collection that explores concepts like love, loss, grief, dysfunctional families, toxic friendships, mental health, the feeling of not fitting in the world, and the last section is about living and loving life, despite all.

In this deeply intimate poetry collection, you will experience the most vulnerable depths of the human experience that you may not have personally lived, but you will feel it.

This book is not about happy endings, healing, rainbows, and sunflowers. This book is about life; the imperfect, flawed, and behind-the-curtain side of life. About the phase before the healing.

A section of the poetry collection deeply delves into how a dysfunctional family affects the lives of children. It challenges the worldview of the reader and gives them imagery of the experience. The poems won’t give you advice but will keep you company and you will feel less alone, like a friend we all need when we just need to be heard.

The poetry collection is divided into ten sections that explore different themes but it’s all linked.

The sections are not in a sequence in which a story unfolds, but they are the many doors of a house. Each with a story of its own.

Dream Pop Origami is a gorgeous, interactive, and engrossing lyrical memoir about hapa identity, love, travel, AAPI masculinities, and personal metamorphosis. This experimental work of creative nonfiction examines, celebrates, and complicates what it means to be Asian & white, Nisei & hapa, Midwestern & Californian, Buddhist & American, all at the same time. In this stunning collection of choose-your-own-essays and autobiographical lists, multiracial identity becomes a counterpoint of memory, language, reflection, and imagination intersecting and interweaving into a coherent tapestry of the mixed-race self. This memoir is easily one of the boldest and most original works of creative nonfiction in 2022.

Newly appointed Optio Lucius Decimus Petronius landed in Caesarea on a tranquil sunny day in 132AD. Unfortunately, the weather provided no hint of what was to come, a storm that would rock the Roman army and spell the demise of the Jewish nation. Petronius recognised his youth would be a challenge as an Optio, but he could not have imagined what he would face in one of the Roman Empire’s most severe and bloody revolts.

The tides of this vicious conflict would see Petronius thrown against the heart of the insurrection and its enigmatic leader, Simeon bar Kokhba. His involvement is made more personal by his relationship with a Jewish girl from the Judaean Hills and the elusive Mordecai ben Zakkai, an agent for a small group of pacifist Jewish rabbis.

There would be no mercy in this contest; Jewish accounts tell of a land overflowing with blood. The war would affect or end countless lives, and Lucius Decimus Petronius would not be immune. The young optio of Legio X Fretensis will be forever changed by the horror of a genocidal war. Messiah! begins his story.

“If she liked you back, would you pursue her?

Would you want to be her boyfriend?”

“Yeah. Absolutely. There’s nobody like her. And I don’t

mean the transgender part. I mean her, you know? Just her.

There’s something beneath that armor. She hasn’t let me in,

so I can’t be certain, but I can feel it. There’s something about

her that makes it worth trying despite all the rejection…”

Kellan, star quarterback and secret manga artist, has fallen hard for Maddie, a trans-girl and Twitch streamer. They’ve gone to school together for years, but Kellan never noticed her until she started presenting as her authentic self. Now she’s all he can think about, even as the rest of his world is crumbling.

But she’s terrified that he’s deluded, not seeing her for who she really is. Will she take a chance and let him in? Will they be able to overcome a cruel society that would rather erase Maddie than accept her? Or will Kellan walk away when the pressure becomes too much?

Written by #OwnVoices transgender author Riley Rian, I Love You Just the Way You Are is a timely coming-of-age novel about opening your heart and discovering the power and magic of love.

“Surprises unfold in the predictable... You can never fully foresee the foreseen.”

Long ago, the four tribes of Aerizon lived as one people, but the time of unity has passed. Now, three of the tribes collectively called the Treedles inhabit the forest canopy. The fourth tribe, the Mergons, live on the ground and pose a constant threat to the Treedles. Laela is a young Treedle girl coming of age in the treetop realm of Aerizon. Her destiny, as yet unrevealed, will cast her in the role of catalyst for epic change.

Laela grows increasingly restless with the cultural limits and expectations for young Treedle women. In her quest to understand and express her authentic self, she faces soul-transforming psychological and physical tests. Unlike Treedle women before her, she pushes back against traditional gender and cultural boundaries. Propelled by mysterious forces, she ventures into the forest and onto the lands below, breaking ground for a new era.

As she evolves spiritually, Laela faces mental challenges, redefining her perception of the impact one person can have on the world. Finally, she gains the courage to raise her voice in defense of herself and her people. Seekers of truth and justice will relate to how Laela grapples with the challenge of finding her guiding values.

Most of these poems are, in one way or another, SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) poems – either poems written for or about people in the two Kingdoms (West and Outlands) where I have so far lived and played, or poems about persons or events in the SCA period (approximately 600-1600 AD). Most of them are written in medieval fixed forms – one of my on-going quests being a search for ways of reproducing the sound and feel of medieval Welsh poetry in modern English. And yet, because the bardic art I practice is a performance art, these are in a larger sense not my poems at all, but merely pale imitations – poems preserved on paper. Until I can come and sing the real poems to you, I hope you will enjoy the substitutes.

After an earthquake shakes Hogville, Henry Bingle, a socially awkward thirteen-year-old, wakes up with his hoarded collections collapsed on top of him. He pulls on the only clothes he can find in the rubble, and the outfit is so wacky that Henry decides to cut school. When he arrives at his favorite spot at the creek his life takes an unexpected and magical turn; he meets a Quercus Nixie, a rare, endangered creature also known by the common name of Oak Elf. The Nixie, Hamphaleon, begs for Henry's help. Someone has dumped a load of noxious junk over the banks of Hogville Creek. The smelly, disgusting garbage landed on Ham's family home, a cozy burrow under the oak roots, trapping his wife and daughter inside. Henry and Ham work feverishly to uncover the entrance to the cave. Finally, Ham's wife and daughter are freed from being buried alive.

Henry and Hamphaleon form a devoted friendship. When Henry tells Ham that he is wondering about what to do for his 8th Grade Final Project, Ham gives Henry an idea; why not dedicate his project to cleaning up the disgusting, polluted Hogville Creek? An inspired Henry gets the whole town involved in his fundraising brainstorm: The Snoot and Snout Extravaganza for Hogs and Dogs. The festival is wildly successful, and the money raised is enough to rent the equipment needed for a massive creek cleanup. Galvanized by their success, Henry and the townspeople eventually transform Hogville from a pigsty of a town to a charming destination for townsfolk and tourists. Best of all, Henry has transformed from an unpopular slob to a respected individual with a park named after him and a budding romance with his 8th grade crush.

Henry Bingle's Transformation is more than a lighthearted romp with magical elements; the story has underlying themes of a deeper nature. Readers will gain appreciation for the value of a clean and beautiful environment and of the positive impact an individual and a community can have on their surroundings. Finally, readers experience first-hand how an ordinary person can become an extraordinary hero.

This collection of writing reflects thoughts stemming from the mid 1990s to early 2000s while growing up in Canada, more specifically Ottawa where I spent approximately nineteen years of my life. Other places that have influenced the pieces of writing are New York City, where I spent a few months living with relatives before returning to Ottawa and then Toronto where I ended up going and living for another significant part of my life. All those places and life itself, from my point of view, are found in my writing.

I hope you enjoy exploring this collection, and I hope it has you thinking and revisiting various pieces time and time again. Also, the poems and prose touch upon subjects such as existence, self-reflection, self-criticism, race, drug addiction, love, adoration, deceased family and friends, ancestry, stereotypes, sex, and other topics.

On a troubled planet orbiting a double star, violent conflict upends the lives of a young man and a young woman. The worst conflict is inside them.

Jackev’s twin brother Encer is dead. Somehow, he’s still around.

A powerful and controlling insurgent force trains Anith to help Jack with Encer’s gnawing presence. She’s a twin, too. Twins have special abilities for connection, or so she and Jack keep being told. "It’s impossible," she thinks. "Jack’s a twin, I’m a twin, but we aren’t each other’s twin."

The clock is ticking. If Anith and Jack can’t find a way to connect—to entwine — the revolutionaries forging them into a double weapon of assassination will be most displeased and the consequences, most unpleasant. Unpleasant for Anith and Jack personally, but disastrous for their planet, riven by civil war.

As for Jack’s dead twin Encer... he’s angry, stuffed inside Jack.

He wants to get out, and he thinks he knows how to do it.

Billions are dead in the wake of a pandemic era. A global sentience tasks telepathic envoys with overseeing a utopian world federation. A brilliant young neuroscientist races to prevent the fulfillment of an ominous prophecy. Things seem challenging enough…until she discovers the shocking magnitude of what she – and humanity – are really up against.

This elevated sci-fi thriller is both a philosophical tour-de-force and emotional roller-coaster, which will change how you think about yourself and the world. Under the ever-present shadow of personal and collective mortality, Freedom Doesn’t Grieve explores a speculative future of religion and freedom, as a parable on their past.

In this debut novel, Resnick, Israeli diplomat and scholar, grabs you at the outset and doesn’t let go until it’s too late to regain what you thought you knew about yourself and humanity’s feckless attempts at charting a sustainable future. In a tabloid world increasingly toying with the dual challenges of nihilism and annihilation, Freedom Doesn’t Grieve is a sobering breath of sanity.

Series: Transit (2)

On a cold and rainy September afternoon, Father Elijah Jonas convinced his followers to abandon the purgatory that was Earth and travel on faith to a new world. Now, forty years after the most important event in human history no one left on Earth witnessed, the descendants of those who followed Elijah have built a remarkable life. From farms to stables to the mundane of the day, life has been fruitful. But, like many things in life and society, what lies under the surface threatens the future.

As natural disasters and wild dangers claim the human residents on the planet Tishbe, relationships strain, families are torn apart and allegiances are tested. For Miriam Michaels, granddaughter of the eldest elder and man responsible for the societal mores and traditions the community follows, the future is found in the unknown. For young Micah, a scribe-in-training, the present is a confusing array of love and hate with few answers to the myriad of questions which emerge daily. And for Miriam’s cousin, Joel, an engineer determined to follow in the footsteps of his mentors, it is the past which holds answers.

For all of them, the journey from their normal life into the unknown will test the strength and resolve of the community and strain relationships, threatening to destroy the grand vision Father Elijah and his followers had for the future of mankind. In sunshine they were born and in shadow they will pass, but not until they can build the life each of them imagine on a planet far from paradise.

It doesn't get easier.
