A new quarter - A new thread.

For those of you who are new (or just have as bad a memory as I do) I'm Amanda, a mom of two (AJ 9, E 7) who works from home as an accountant in the Seattle area. I listen to books as I work, mostly non-fiction, romance, science fiction, fantasy, and a little mystery. I'm am a huge fan of my local libraries, especially the reciprocal borrowing arrangement that gives me access to 11 library cards. (I have 10 and hope to get the last one sometime this year.)

I was born and raised on Vancouver Island, BC, before moving to the US Midwest in my early twenties. We moved back to the PNW at the beginning of 2022, and I am so glad to be back. I do my best to get the kids up to see my family (my parents still live in the house we moved into when I was 6 months old) at least once a month. And my in-laws come to visit us or the kids visit them regularly (either from/in the Midwest or the Southwest, depending on the season).

I also quilt, knit, spin, and other assorted crafting. I am a datageek, so all sorts of weird facts and graphs will pop-up from time to time.

I will also be tracking here a handful of challenges. AlphaKit and Bingo from the Category Challenges group, and Pick Your Poison. I also, rather ambitiously, chose to try and read 5 books from 7 of the Goodreads Choice Awards list from last year.

>29 FAMeulstee: Thanks. I've never made it past a first thread before, so this is exciting for me!

>30 curioussquared: Thanks. I know they keep changing, but I can't help but tinker with my Power Bi report. (Good practice for work). Luckily, I've been tracking all the info for a while, so it was just a matter of creating the visuals rather than going back and filling in the data.

>31 PaulCranswick: Thanks. I know there's a lot of data there, but it all makes sense to me and is helping me keep motivated. And I do similar things for work, so it just makes sense to me.

>32 drneutron: Thanks. I think I can keep this up for the next quarter. I don't feel so overwhelmed if I commit just 3 months at a time 😊

>34 dreamweaver529: Thanks. I hope so too. I'm managing to stay about where I need to be for most of my reading goals, and have come across a lot of good 5★ books.

With You Forever by Chloe Liese
Bergman Brothers Book 4

This is the last reread of this series for me. I do enjoy them. Buuutttttt.....I have two itty-bitty nitpicky issues.

1) As someone who grew up on 5.5 achers, I can tell you if this cabin is half as isolated as it seems, they are not getting city water. Which means a well. So, when you lose power, your pump stops working. No pump, no water pressure. No water pressure, no shower. (Being able to flush your toilet without power was so strange to me when I moved into the city).

2) I do not believe there is any way you are getting in to see a therapist in less than 24hrs of initial contact. Month-long wait lists are considerably more likely. Oh, and how is she paying for 3 emergency visits? Do you have any idea how much that sh....stuff costs?

I Am Able to Shine by Korey Watari

I love how this book illustrates rather complicated topics in a way kids can understand and relate to. Perseverance, determination, even non-physical strength. These are concepts that are important for people to internalise early, and this book is a good place to start talking about what they mean to children and their families.

The Smart Cookie by Jory John

#195
The Bad Seed by Jory John
Food Group Book 1

This book is a great way to initiate a conversation about how mental health can affect people's behavior. Well probably not appropriate for a children's story, I wish there was a way they could have included how hard expectations and reactions of others can make it hard to change behavior.

>45 dreamweaver529: and the answer is No. I am at 201, so 4 books behind.

And that in 3 weeks. I have had a very bad July. Not overly surprising. Summer is never a good reading time for me, with the routine of the school year being absent, and thus not giving me my normal framework. These last few weeks were particularly bad as not only did I hit a low reading motivation spell, but I had friends from out-of-state visit and I got sicker than I've been in years. So, bussy mixed with blah does not reading make.

I'm only 4 books behind my Read 365 Book In A Year goal, which is fixable. I just know I need to get ahead of it because my next big I don't have time to read is Christmas through New Year.

Shielding the Baby by Laura Scott

The basics story wasn't bad, but not good either. And then there were the eye-rollingly consistent and jarring Christan elements. To each their own, I suppose, but I was afraid my eyes were going to get stuck backward by the end of it.

The Great Courses: Military History Book 30470

Ago 3, 2023, 12:33 pm

Okay, I'm torn. Which category should audiobooks go into when they fall on the dividing line?

In my graphs, I have been counting them as the shorter group. So a book that is 10 hours (or within 7 minutes on either side), has counted as a 5-10 hour book (I've read 7 books that fall into this scenario). But looking at it, it doesn't feel quite right.

What do you guys think? Is the bottom or top number in a range inclusive?

58curioussquared
Ago 3, 2023, 12:40 pm

I think I would treat it as a cutoff -- so they're in the 5-10 hour bucket until they hit 10:00:01, then they're in the 10-15 hour bucket. But go with your gut!

Another good book, that I wish took on just a bit more. In this one, I was left with a need to talk to my kids that while it's important to give people a second chance when people don't respect you and what you need over and over again, it's okay to minimize/avoid contract with them.

The Four Pillars Book 2

Another good book in this series, with great world-building.

And that gets me through August. I can't do the graphs I would normally do, because I didn't take screenshots at the time, and trying to get my setup to think it's Aug 31 now is a big pain.

Hopefully, by the end of September, I'll be all caught up.

So much good reading!!! Congrats on 3x75 :)

- Dealing with Dragons is one of my favorites from my childhood -- the whole series is a total comfort read for me.
- I loved Kaiju Preservation Society too!!
- The Harper Hall trilogy is another one of my favorites from childhood. I think they're my favorite Pern books.
- I haven't read anything by H M Long but have heard really good things about their new book Dark Water Daughter. Didn't even realize they had written anything else!

> Thanks! I have had a lot of good luck with picking books, especially after I decided to only read what I like. Who knew that would make such a big difference?

My only suggestion for H M Long is to not wait too long between books. They are rather intense, and staying "in-world" is probably a good idea.

Okay, I've changed my mind, I'm going to do most of my graphs. These are the ones that are easier to backdate.

So what of think of my new layout?

Everything for You by Chloe Liese
Bergman Brothers Book 5

Not my favorite in his series. And I have to agree with other comments I've read that the narrator wasn't the best. In the past, there has been a narrator for each of the POV characters, and given that one of the characters was supposed to have lived in England for years I think it would have been better two have two narrators for this one too.

To Wed a Wicked Highlander by Victoria Roberts
Bad Boys of the Highlands Book 3

A good romance. Though, given that the main male lead is supposed to be the leader of his clan, he seems a little too gullible and naive to me.

And I definitely feel you on the "I own this book that I know I'm going to love but just haven't gotten to it yet - Oh, new one by the same other, I need it too!". I have way too many unread books on Audible, and way too many books out from the library that just get renewed and renewed. There is not enough time in the day.

Okay, I've finally caught up. All of my books have been added to my Library here, had reading dates added (at least the finish date), starred appropriately, and tagged with "read in 2023". I have done the same in Goodreads as well.

In doing so, I realized that I read a comic/graphic novel that didn't get onto my main Excel tracking worksheet (but did get added on Goodreads). So, rather than fit it back in where it would belong, I'm just going to add it here.
