Sobre El Autor

John Dickson Carr, the master of locked room mysteries, was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1906. He was educated at Haverford College and the Sorbonne in Paris. Carr is a prolific writer with more than 80 novels and collections of short stories to his credit. He began his writing career at the mostrar más age of 26 with his first published novel, It Walks At Night. Some of his most popular works are The Three Coffins (1935), The Burning Coat (1937), and The Bride of Newgate (1951). Carr also collaborated with Adrian Doyle, the son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes (1954). Carr met his wife in 1932 and settled in England in 1933. He was drafted by the United States military in World War II, and was ordered to remain in England and work with the BBC. He lived in many cities throughout the world until 1967, when he permanently moved to Greenville, South Carolina. John Dickson Carr also wrote mystery novels under the name Carter Dickson. La acción se inicia cuando Ken Blake se encuentra con su viejo amigo, Dean Halliday, que le cuenta la historia de Plague Court (la casa señorial de la familia). Halliday explica que la casa está embrujada por el fantasma del propietario original, Louis Playge, verdugo de profesión. Halliday invita Blake y el inspector jefe Humphrey Masters a tomar parte en una sesión de espiritismo, dirigido por Roger Darworth y su medium Joseph.
Sin embargo, Darworth es un fraude y está siendo vigilado por la policía. La noche de la sesión de espiritismo, Darworth se encierra en una pequeña casa de piedra, detrás de Plague Court, mientras que tiene lugar una sesión espiritista. Cuando Masters y Blake van a buscarlo, ha sido apuñalado hasta la muerte con la daga de Louis Playge.
Pero todas las puertas y ventanas están cerradas y bloqueadas, y treinta pies de barro sin pisar rodean la casa. Además, todos los sospechosos han estado tomados de las manos durante la celebración de la sesión de espiritismo.… (más)

Las hazañas de Sherlock Holmes por Adrian Conan Doyle
Desde 1887, año en que la revista londinense Beeton’s Christmas Annual publicó Estudio en escarlata, la primera aventura de Sherlock Holmes escrita por Arthur Conan Doyle, se han sucedido sin descanso las imitaciones, parodias y homenajes del genial detective escritos por muy diferentes autores. Adrian Conan Doyle, hijo de Sir Arthur, y John Dickson Carr, el célebre autor de novelas policiacas, aunaron sus fuerzas en 1952 para desvelar algunos de los casos que el doctor Watson había mencionado en las historias originales pero que no se había atrevido a narrar por considerar que su publicación podría causar escándalo o dañar la reputación de terceras personas.
Las hazañas de Sherlock Holmes, considerada por los especialistas como la más fiel y precisa recreación del universo de Sherlock Holmes, es el resultado de esta histórica colaboración, y conserva el mismo sabor pleno del Londres victoriano, con la niebla brotando del Támesis y Holmes diciendo una vez más a su fiel ayudante: «¡Vamos, Watson, comienza el juego!»… (más)
