Somewhat disappointing volume of detective stories from the 1930s to modern times. Despite the title, two of the stories, including the longest, are not even about murder. And some of those which are, lack something - there's an Ellis Peters story which is very unconvincing, and a Val McDermid story which is not believable in many respects but strains to be 'with it.' The best written is probably the Ian Rankin story, although he is not a writer whose subjects and characters I care for much.

Enjoyable Christmas afternoon reading, encompassing over 100 years of classic British detective authors from Arthur Conan Doyle and G.K. Chesterton to Val McDermid. All were entertaining and new to me: the only one that disappointed (despite some nice Oxford scene-setting) was the one by Edmund Crispin, which seemed to have too gaping a plot hole to make a satisfactory whodunit story. A bit of a mixed bag in both the story content and the link to Christmas.

As others have sais some of the links to Christmas are very tenuous. The stories could be set in any time of the year as they are really just 'cosy' crime stories.

I enjoyed 'Twixt the Cup and Lip (Julian Symons) particularly and the Christmas element here was reasonably strong.

I'm sorry to say that Dorothy L. Sayers' Nebuchadnezzar was my least favourite. I just didn't get the point of it at all.

The other eight stories there were enjoyable tales, mainly winter, rather than Christmas specifically.

A nice little Holmes and Watson tale that is a sequel of sorts to 'A Scandal in Bohemia' by Gillian Linscott.

Overall a pleasant, light, read for the festive season, but not 'Christmassy'. All the tales are of the kind of the 'golden age' of crime fiction writing.
