Snuff
According to the writer of the best selling crime novel ever to
have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth
universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would
barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his
first corpse.
And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on
holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him
a mere body in the wardrobe, but many, many bodies and an ancient
crime more terrible than murder.
He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon
sandwiches, occasionally snookered and occasionally out of his
mind, but not out of guile. Where there is a crime there must be
a finding, there must be a chase and there must be a punishment.
They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.
But not quite all...

oooh, more vimes means more...patrician!

4> Not necessarily, if Vimes is on vacation in the country. However, more Vetinari is always a good thing, so I hope you're right.

The City Guards arc was always my favorite - not even Ms. Weatherwax can beat that.
Still, I hope this new novel will be better then Thud, a book that left me a bit unsatisfied. Well, after Night Watch, that imho is the best book Pratchett ever wrote, I probably had too big expectations.

Kratima: Really? I loved Thud!, although I agree that Night Watch is far and away the best.

I liked Thud so much that I bought the company, er, game. I just wish there was somebody to play it with!
Oh, and Kratima, that's Mistress Weatherwax!
The latest Discworld Monthly indicates that the new book is now out of Pterry's hands and in the production machinery!

justjim - I was soooo tempted. If my husband were more of a Pratchett fan, I would have bought it for him, but I'm not much good at games of skill and thought.

I have played thud. It is remarkably difficult, and has quite an inventive gameplay - offhand I can't think of another game that has you reverse positions and try both sets of stratagies. A flexible mind is certainly very important!
I was very unimpressed with night watch and found it pedestrian compared to many of Vimes' other exploits. Granny is still my favourite.
However I expect Snuff to have the whole of the crime genre to send up in true pTerry fashion. Look out for miss marples, holmes' and far too many clues. Sounds fun.

And of course there will be mysterious relatives, suspicious butlers, and missing documents.

At the NADWCon, Colin Smythe told me that the approval copies are on his desk, so it's looking good for hitting the Oct 11 (Oct 13 in the UK) release date.

Hi Jim,
Do you recon that "Snuff" will be released in Australia very soon after the Official release, or is it worthwhile pre-ordering it from Amazon?
Guido.
PS. At 500 plus quid, I guess I CAN wait.

For aussie members www.fishpond.com.au is accepting pre-orders for Snuff for $27.99, post free.
19justjim
I'll have some of that, thank you very much!
Edit: well, perhaps not. TBD has it for $23.50 with free delivery!

LOL - I think that Fishpond has the US edition for $22.99 but I prefer to stay with the British version.

Picked up Snuff at the local bookstore, Mysterious Galaxy, today! Haven't started it yet, but that won't last for long.

I got my copy today from Amazon! I am so excited. I am also going to NYC on Thursday to Terry. :D

Since Snuff is starting to trickle in, would the first person to finish it please start a thread similar to this one to discuss it. I'd hate to see spoilers here!
25pinkozcat
#24 I agree - a new thread for those who have read Snuff is the way to go.
My copy should arrive in a day or two and I want it to be a complete surprise when I read it.

I have it, but I'm letting my daughter read it first, since I am immersed in Jim Butcher's world at the moment. :)
28justjim
Thanks. Well, mostly. Now that thread is sitting there about halfway down my talk page with "1 Unread/1" with the unwritten meaning that "These numbers are going to increase as other people read this book and you don't, Jim. MWHAaaahaaaahaaaa!"
So, yeah, mostly thanks! ;)

It's here! It's here, it's here! Current re-read contemptuously pushed aside, Mount TBR scorned. Like a rock star at a night club door, Sir Pterry gets the VIP treatment and goes straight to the head of the queue!
I'll be joining you in the discussion thread very shortly.

Argh, I have a copy on order from a seller who shall remain nameless, because they had it for half price and usualy get things to me really quickly. It still hasn't arrived, and I've been seeing copies in bookshops all week ...
31dfmorgan
My local Tesco's had it for £5.00 on Saturday when I did my usual weekend shopping. I was tempted but my February pre-order had been despatched.
33joannasephine
No, but I have finally given up on waiting and cancelled my original order. They list the delivery time on their website as “Ships within 24 hours from our UK Warehouse!” but still have a dispatch date of October 26th on the copy I preordered three months ago …
34justjim
That sounds like The Book Depository's blurb. That's who delivered my copy on the 16th (see #29)!
35guido47
I was gunna get mine from BD but decided to support an Australian company instead - Fishpond - Bah, Humbug, still not here :-(
38joannasephine
#35 - snap! although mine was Fishpond NZ. Usually pretty good, but utterly pants this time.
41MrsLee
I save Pratchetts for times when I'm depressed and need a for sure thing to read. I've only a few left in the Discworld series that I haven't read, so I'm hoarding them. Actually, all I have left is Pyramids and Maurice and His Educated Rodents.
43pinkozcat
I disagree - I loved Pyramids and if you take the trouble to pronounce the names they are very clever.
