This review applies to the 1997 spiral bound edition. For serious advice on heart rate based training, I found this book to be a great reference. She goes into detail about the effect on the runner like no other book that I have read. "Lactic acid junkies like me love hanging out in the Redline zone because we get faster while training at the same heart rate or intensity. ... Z5 is a dangerous place because if you don't come visit often enough you can't readh your peak, but if you overstay your visit your body won't invite you to return. ... The Redline zone is feed by many and misunderstood by more." (Chapter 11 first 2 pages in that chapter.)

For general reference I use Tim Nokes. For HR based training I used this book.

Written by marathoner and Triathlon Hall of Fame inductee, Sally Edwards Be a Better Runner addresses the goal of most runners - to run faster and longer - to run better. You’ll learn about the magical "black hole" and how to avoid it. You'll learn about barefoot running. And, you'll learn about the latest running system - threshold - which uses a heart rate monitor to manage your running improvements.

Co-authored with Carl Foster, Ph.D., and University of Wisconsin exercise science professor and researcher, Be a Better Runner features the latest research in the science of running. You’ll learn the latest science on how to boost your performance, train more effectively, and aid post-workout recovery. The latest research on special concerns such as running after age 40, during pregnancy, overtraining in younger runners and preventing amenorrhoea in female distance runners is also highlighted.

Excellent book which really helped to improve my fitness levels. There are some really good tips in here about how to get the best use out of a heart rate monitor and combining that with other subjects like over-training, losing weight etc.
