Roy M. Wallack has survived the Eco-Challenge, the Soviet Union by bike, and some of the world's toughest two-wheel events. He is the author of The Traveling Cyclist and several running and fitness books, a former editor at Bicycle Guide, California Bicyclist, and Triathlete magazines, a longtime mostrar más sports-gear columnist and health-features writer for the Los Angeles Times. He also covers cycling, fitness, longevity, triathlon, running, MMA, and sports trends for many national magazines. Calling himself "a religious man who believes in the Holy Trinity of road, mountain, and tandem," Roy has traveled the world by bike and spent much of his career writing about them. Mostly skimmed this since I am looking for information on walking rather than running.

I rode my 40 pound bike about 3000 miles last year, including the PTNY Erie Canal ride. The Erie Canal ride is 400 miles over 8 days, so 50 miles a day on average. This is not the kind of riding that Wallack and Katovsky spend much time discussing! Nothing wrong, of course, with the ultra-endurance etc. extreme sorts of competitive events they focus on. I suppose a lot of people need to push themselves toward some grand goal if they're to get up off the couch at all.

This is a fun enough book. There are very nice interviews with a wide range of serious cyclists. The book does cover many aspects of cycling. But it does focus mostly on serious competition.

Probably the scariest chapter was on osteoporosis. A local friend of mine who is a serious competitive cyclist just broke his hip. I must say, this chapter has got me out running more frequently.

I like staying in decent shape by getting out to ride regularly. I like getting out on my bike to explore the countryside. I suspect there are a lot of people who could get a lot out of cycling but who are put off by the serious competitive approach that is so common in bicycling literature, including this book. There is good information here but it does sadden me that the richest potential of the title wasn't really tapped.

She has competed in some of the hardest races on the planet, including the Western States 100-Mile Run which she won. A leader in the field of fitness training, Sally holds a master’s in Exercise Physiology and is the creator and CEO of the Heart Zones Training System which uses heart rate data and cardiac training ranges to enhance athletic performance. A founder of the sport of triathlon (and a Triathlon Hall of Fame inductee), most of Sally’s recent races have been performed in her role as the National Spokeswoman for the Danskin Triathlon Series.

Carl Foster Ph.D., FACSM is the former president of the American College of Sports Medicine. He is a professor of exercise and sport science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at UW-L. Foster is a former associate editor-in-chief of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and a co-editor of ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines. His distinguished professional career and accomplishments have produced over 250 scientific papers, book chapters, and longer works.
