- Adriaan van Dis is op 16 december 1946 geboren in Bergen, Noord-Holland. Zijn moeder, Marie van Dis, woonde op dat moment ongetrouwd samen met Victor Mulder, een ex-militair uit het Koninklijk Indisch Leger (KNIL). Ze had al drie dochters uit een huwelijk met een andere Indische man. Mulder had ze leren kennen in Indonesië, in de periode tussen de Japanse capitulatie en hun vertrek naar Nederland. Omdat Mulder nog een echtgenote in Indonesië had, was hij niet met Marie van Dis getrouwd. Hun zoon werd in de dagelijkse omgang Adje Mulder genoemd maar heette volgens de officiële documenten Adriaan van Dis. Doordat hij een ‘onecht kind’ was en zijn halfzussen er Indisch uitzagen, nam Adriaan in het gezin een bijzondere positie in. Toen hij tien jaar oud was, overleed zijn vader. Dit was voor hem een aangrijpende gebeurtenis, hoewel hij een moeizame relatie had met zijn vader. Mulder voedde zijn zoon met strenge hand op; de gruwelijke herinneringen die hij had aan de periode waarin hij dwangarbeid voor de Japanners verrichtte, bepaalden in sterke mate het leven in het gezin.
Na de middelbare school volgde Adriaan van Dis een opleiding MO-Nederlands en een studie Zuid-Afrikaans. Tussendoor maakte hij een reis ‘richting India’, maar hij kwam niet verder dan Afghanistan. Vanaf 1974 publiceerde hij regelmatig in NRC Handelsblad; uiteindelijk werd hij chef van het zaterdagbijvoegsel. Bekendheid kreeg hij met zijn boekenprogramma op de VPRO-televisie Hier is… Adriaan van Dis. Sinds 2003 woont hij in Parijs.

At that time, Van Dis had not yet published any literature himself, neither had he come out as a writer. In fact, he hadn't come out in any particular other sense either. On Dutch television, Adriaan van Dis appeared as an extremely sophisticated gentleman.
With the publication of his books, more aspects of his life, his past and his interests were revealed. It seems that behind the façade of erudition, behind the mask, there is a strong drive to break out, a longing for the perverse. Casablanca. Schetsen en verhalen is a collection of short stories that give naughty peeks into that other world, which unfortunately comes with danger.

Midden in de nacht kruipt hij bij mij in bed, een jongen van een jaar of negen.
Set on an imaginary island off the coast of West Africa against a composite background of African postcolonial traumas (amongst other things, there are deliberate echoes of the conflicts in Biafra, Mali, and Western Sahara), this is a kind of Burnt out case story about an American artist, adrift in Africa after the collapse of her family, who finds a sort of resolution to her life in a quixotic — and disastrous —attempt to help refugees. Van Dis manages to address all the classic problems of the westerner in Africa without ever seeming unduly didactic. This is all "our" fault, but that doesn't mean that we have any right to claim to have answers to the problems of the countries the greed of our ancestors messed up, or to expect our solutions to work.
