Barbara Hambly lives in Los Angeles, where she is at work on the sixth Benjamin January novel, "Wet Grave", which Bantam will publish in 2002. Her second Benjamin January novel, "Fever Season", was named a "New York Times" Notable Book of the Year. She received a master's degree in medieval history from the University of California at Riverside in 1975. She has worked as a high-school teacher, a model, a waitress, a technical editor, and a karate instructor. At one time, she also wrote scripts for cartoons like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and He-Man. She writes many different types of books including fantasy, romance, and mystery. Her works include the Darwath Trilogy, the Benjamin January Mysteries series, Those Who Hunt the Night, The Emancipator's Wife, Someone Else's Shadow, and Patriot Ladies. Con el buen sabor de boca del primero me hice con Travelling with the Dead, la segunda parte de las aventuras de James Asher y Don Ysidro.
Ambos libros cuentan historias independientes y el segundo puede leerse perfectamente sin haber leído el otro primero, aunque cierto conocimiento previo de los personajes puede ser recomendable, no es imprescindible.
James Asher, intrigado por su encuentro con un espía húngaro y uno de los vampiros londinenses, decide seguirlos por media Europa preocupado por el posible servicio del vampiro al imperio austro-húngaro en los albores del siglo XX, al borde de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Tras él va su esposa, Lydia Asher, acompañada por Don Ysidro y una dama de compañía impuesta por el vampiro para salvaguardar su honor. Con esta premisa empieza la historia que va alternando entre uno y otros a medida que recorren Europa.
Aunque el libro me ha gustado bastante y el final está muy bien, las partes de Lydia Asher me han parecido bastante lentas. Lydia Asher es un personaje interesante -una científica brillante con los defectos de una heredera inglesa de principios de s.XX- pero sus continuas quejas sobre el comportamiento de la influenciable y tontorrona dama de compañía y las algo repetitivas descripciones del vampiro (sí, ya sabemos que es muy pálido y delgaducho) lastran un poco la narración.
Esto es puro entretenimiento sin más, algo de misterio, unos cuantos vampiros de la vieja escuela y unas cuantas aventuras para una lectura sin más pretensiones. Con esto en mente lo recomendaría a cualquiera que le guste alguna de las características anteriores. Por mi parte, ya tengo en mi wishlist el tercero y el cuarto.… (más)
