Future Green Dragon Group Read Books

Descripción
A list of potential works to be group read in the Green Dragon group for the group reads I run. My criteria are fantasy or science fiction owned by around 500 or less members, either standalones, duologies, or trilogies, that I find interesting and want to read and discuss.

imyril: okay, I'd heard of this and somehow got entirely the wrong idea about it. Looking more closely, it sounds far more interesting than I'd realised and I'm suddenly quite excited to read it. It seems to be on offer as an ebook in the UK too!
pwaites: This is one of my favorite books this year. I'd love to read it again as a group.
sandstone78: Gladstone's ongoing series is set in a fantasy world that integrates quite a bit of modern concepts like lawyers and that kind of thing- it sounds like an interesting blend that I've not encountered before.
zjakkelien: I read this while some time ago, and thought it was really good. The world is incredibly original, and that cover is not lying: a black female heroine! Really love that cover...

sandstone78: A story set in a medieval place where not all is what it seems- looking too closely at reviews or tags will spoil what's going on, though, and the experience is quite different knowing. There's lots of room for speculation, but unfortunately the series isn't finished and there is no estimate on the next book's completion.
zjakkelien: One of the best 'forgotten' fantasy books. I don't get why Rosemary Kirstein is not more popular, because her books are really amazing. The world is astonishing. The very concept of a steerswoman I really loved: someone who seeks answers in an almost scientific way. She must answer every question asked of her if she knows the answer, and in turn, other people must answer all her questions, or be banned from getting information from a steerswoman ever. Two heroines, friendship between women, a heroine who is awesome because of her mind; what's not to love?

pwaites: Sounds interesting, and I haven't read it before.
sandstone78: This is a series of noir-ish murder mysteries set in the Aztec empire. I've enjoyed a lot of de Bodard's short fiction and am curious to see what she would do with a longer work in an interesting setting like this.

sandstone78: This duology stands alone, but is also one of the recommended entry points for West's long-running Averlaan universe. I've started this one but put it aside due to not being in the mood before, but I'd like to get back to it- this seems like an interesting epic fantasy with a lot going on.
zjakkelien: I read a lot of the other books in this world, but not these two. Perhaps I should...

imyril: I enjoyed what Valente did with The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland and I've heard better things about Night Garden, so I'd certainly be up for this.
pwaites: The Kindle edition for this one's right at $10, so I'd probably try to get it in paperback which would take me longer.
sandstone78: Valente's lyrical work seems intelligent and packed with references and plays on fairy tales that would make for some great discussion.

sandstone78: A standalone about a group of humans, descendants of survivors of a crashed ship, who live in an asteroid among aliens with a rather different family structure than humans. The story is about a woman who lives on the asteroid and what happens once other humans arrive. The setup seems to have some potential.
zjakkelien: This sounds really interesting!

sandstone78: This is a trilogy set in prehistoric times in a tribal society, dealing with mythic concepts like the change of the seasons. I was drawn by the cover to pick up the first book, but the series seems to have been almost completely overlooked by everyone. The series seems to cover multiple generations of the same family.

sandstone78: I've only heard good things about this trilogy, which I understand is space opera with a sort-of military focus, and very good and in-depth characterization. I've heard that it's reminiscent of Cherryh.

imyril: Sounds intriguing
sandstone78: An interesting and sadly overlooked space opera that I learned of from a Jo Walton post on Tor.com- warring empires led by immortal Emperors and an amnesiac who seems very important to the conflict. The characters are interesting, the plot is compelling, and it has a diversity somewhat unusual for its publication date- same-sex relationships are not out of the ordinary in this future. The ebook is available for download for free or with a donation at the author's website.

imyril: Sakerfalcon mentioned McHugh earlier today too, so she's firmly on my list of author's I'd like to explore.
: It's lesser known because it isn't very good. Try Mission Child or China Mountain Zhang instead.
sandstone78: This seems like something of a thriller set in an underwater city. I've heard a lot of good things about McHugh's work, but this seems to be one of her lesser-known books.
