elkiedee (8): Wide Sargasso Sea is the story of Antoinette, known as Bertha, the Madwoman in the Attic of Jane Eyre. It's a very different perspective on the and story, and offers a bit of a challenge to the idea of Mr Rochester as a romantic hero. I'm not really a fan of Jane Eyre, apart from the early chapters which fascinated ms a child, and love WSS. I suspect that people who love JE and find it romantic will feel aggrieved by the challenge of WSS.… (más)

elkiedee (9): I think it's not really inspired by or a response to Emma. Mary Webb was a popular author at the time and some of her work has been repented by Virago, and I understand that this was a parody of more contemporary novels than of Jane Austen.… (más)
