The Great Gatsby is a classic that I’ve always found hard to understand because it has so much depth and so many themes to be explored. I’ve studied The Great Gatsby in college, and this graphic novel helped me understand even more. I loved the illustrations and colors used, and Fitzgerald’s writing was still captured beautifully for it just being an adaptation. ( ) I found this graphic novel adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's classic to be really enjoyable! I had two graphic novel versions of this classic story, but after skimming both of them, I ended up keeping this version and getting rid of the other one. The adaptation of the story felt more accurate, and actual excerpts from the original novel are included. In addition, the watercolor paintings lend a whimsical effect to the story, even illustrating some of the daydreams and metaphors that F Scott Fitzgerald wrote. The colors also add a whimsical, airy feel to it, mirroring the dreamy, fantastical romance of Gatsby and Daisy. The color scheme becomes less playful when the novel takes dramatic turns, but they remain rather light and pastel-ish, which does detract some from the seriousness of the themes and topics, at times. In addition, the author has both omitted parts of the story (especially any anti-Semitism) and added some new elements, so the story isn't 100% accurate to the original, but it's still a wonderful adaptation of a classic! From the green light across the bay to the billboard with spectacled eyes, F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 American masterpiece roars to life in K. Woodman-Maynard's exquisite graphic novel--among the first adaptations of the book in this genre. Painted in lush watercolors, the inventive interpretation emphasizes both the extravagance and mystery of the characters, as well as the fluidity of Nick Carraway's unreliable narration. Excerpts from the original text wend through the illustrations, and imagery and metaphors are taken to literal, and often whimsical, extremes, such as when a beautiful partygoer blooms into an orchid and Daisy Buchanan pushes Gatsby across the sky on a cloud. This faithful yet modern adaptation will appeal to fans with deep knowledge of the classic, while the graphic novel format makes it an ideal teaching tool to engage students. With its timeless critique of class, power, and obsession, The Great Gatsby Graphic Novel captures the energy of an era and the enduring resonance of one of the world's most beloved books.
