"It's a crazy story. In August 1964 a thirty-six-year-old Canadian from a famous family--one who has already joined the navy during war at age thirteen, become an officer, earned a PhD, and taught ethics at the University of Toronto--takes up residence in a little house he just bought in the village of Trosly, France, with two mentally disabled men he has removed from a care home. The house, which he calls l'Arche (the Ark), has neither water nor electricity. His plan? None. He is just convinced he has to do it, touched by the silent cry of these men shut up in the gloomy, violent institution where he found them. His example is contagious; within months the community has grown to over fifty. Jean Vanier is known and loved around the world for having created L'Arche, those unique communities of people with disabilities and their volunteer caregivers in more than one hundred and fifty sites on five continents. But Vanier is also a philosopher, a spiritual master who touches believers and nonbelievers alike, a tireless messenger of peace and ecumenism, and an adventurer with life full of twists and turns. [This] literary biography paints a rare portrait of this extraordinary man and the events and influences that shaped his destiny."--Publisher's description.… (más)

Called to Community: The Life Jesus Wants for His People por Charles E. Moore (muumi)
muumi: Called to Community contains articles and excerpts from the works of many Christian writers. Jean Vanier is very well represented amongst the editors' choices. Anyone who enjoyed reading his thoughts in the context of Called to Community might want to read about his life in community as presented by Mme Constant, and vice versa.… (más)

Some people seem so ordinary. In "Jean Vanier: Free Man"; we see a man like that. He just founded a place for people with mental handicaps. That seems simple and small. Except that he ended up leading the Pope in a pilgramacy because that small refuge is more radical as a place and a method of care than he ever could have imagined.

This book is very irrelevant after the revelations of Vanier's sexual assault on six women. There are others who do the good work without being wolves. Don't bother with this one.

I grabbed this because I was genuinely interested in Vanier's life, and what drove him to make such a radical change in the lives of those considered mentally disabled, and from there springboard into changing the lives of so many. For so long those considered different mentally were locked away. Vanier flipped the script and changed the lives of two men simply by offering something new to them - care and kindness. A powerful story of a unique man, who's simple decision eventually spread across five continents. ( )

I found this a deeply moving read.; not only is this a biography of the live of Jean Vanier, but also gives a glimpse in the communities established known as L'Arche . Having known someone that for a time lived within that community I can attest to the good that it has done. The book itself is well laid out and sectioned in such a way that it makes for a great read when you have short amounts of time. Recommended. ( )

This is the story of a remarkable person, Jean Vanier, who transformed himself from a Canadian military person to a person who developed compassionate communities for peoples with intellectual disabilities. He transformed the care of people who might otherwise be regarded as difficult. But the L'Arche Communities are recognized as leaders for providing these people a home. The one surprise in this book is the lack of mention of Henry Nouwen. This name might not ring a bell with continental French as Nouwen is perhaps perceived as very North American, even though he spent considerable time in the L'Arch Community in France. ( )
