BooksInMirror | Feb 19, 2024 |  It was as if the publisher grabbed some guy out of a creative writing course and told him the storylines of a number of O’Briens books and then said now write the next one. The first 40 pages are setting up what should be a great story then 340 pages of idiocy, And then the book spends 80 pages explaining everything you already knew happened or would happen. Unfortunately the 340 pages are where you have to suspend everything you know about how most people would behave and just believe this was realistic. The home invaders portion or the story took over from the main story and was unneeded,unreal, and at times comical. I sure hope this was a one off mistake and not the path his future books will follow. The writing style was impressive and easy to follow. The story flowed from one chapter to the next with a smooth transition. I won this book in a LibraryThing contest and received the audio version. Transfer onto my phone made listening to the story easy and convenient. The audio was well produced and the voices were easy to listen to. I did have a bit of trouble in the first few chapters. It was a bit difficult to concentrate on what was happening at the beginning. After the first few chapters of the book, though, there was no problem. At that time the story picked up and was quite riveting. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves both mysteries and thrillers. A wonderful read with a very good conclusion. Well done!
