This is the definitive history of thoroughbred racing's three premier events, which have never before been explored in such detail. This book gives the history of America's classic races from the inaugural Belmont Stakes in 1867 through 2013, identifying which equine participants were truly worthy of lasting acclaim and which were one-hit wonders. Perhaps even more compelling are the stories of the men and women who rode, trained, owned, or bred classic winners, including their exploits on the turf and their triumphs and failures in arenas far removed from horse racing.… (más)

This has been a really fun book to have around especially during the Triple Crown Races. Everyone calls me now for info on everything from crossword puzzle clues to settling arguments on past winners. Anyone who loves horse racing will enjoy this book. Has everything form the breeders to the trainers and riders. ( )

Here is a book that does exactly what it says on the tin... er, cover. A somewhat dry reference book densely packed with details but light on the sorts of images or insights that make for easier reading, this truly comprehensive history is useful for dipping into for interesting tidbits, for checking facts, and for those with a research-related interest in the Triple Crown races. Otherwise, you could use it to impress your friends come Derby day. Which is probably what I'm going to do. :) ( )

This is an exhaustive and dense treatment of the classic races. It's definitely not a book to sit down and read, but to refer to as needed. That being said, there are marvelous stories of the people involved if you read through or even just flip to a random year. The only thing to make it an even better reference would be to include more photos. 'The Kentucky Derby...' is a beautiful addition to a racing fan's library and something that should make the author very proud.

This is a truly exhaustive (both for the reader and for the author!) compendium of facts about the three races which comprise horse-racing's Triple Crown. As a fan of the races, I found this a fascinating work, albeit not one which can be read in one sitting. It would be an excellent book for any fan of horse-racing. More pictures would have been nice, but then the book would have been even bigger! ( )

Coffee-table reference book dense with well-written snippets of equestrian history, which I found truly fascinating. Anyone curious to learn more about the sport of racing -- or, to learn more than the influx of information that hits public media a scant day each year -- would do very well to pick this up. (Every girl who grew up reading the Thoroughbred series? This one's for you.) I was particularly impressed with the detailed indexes and appendices. Five stars as a solid reference, four stars as general reading material.
