Winston Churchill, the cigar-puffing icon of the British fighting spirit, embarks on a post-WWII crusade to lift the veil of secrecy that hangs over Stalin’s Soviet Union. Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri sets the diplomatic stage upon which the world’s political players grapple for supremacy as Churchill delivers his fated Iron Curtain speech on March 5th 1946. While the Soviet sphere of influence creeping across Europe is to be exposed, Stalin’s NKVD recruits Frank Mueller, a zealous Nazi and former member of the German American Bund to assassinate Winston Churchill. During his mission, Mueller begins a dangerous affair with a woman he doesn't realize is his natural enemy. Only Churchill's loyal bodyguard, W. H. Thompson, senses trouble but will he react in time to save Churchill's life? In this gripping thriller co-authored by acclaimed author Warren Adler and Pulitzer Prize nominated Churchill historian James C. Humes, battles are fought not on the beaches, but behind closed doors in the shadows of espionage.… (más)

An enjoyable "what if" read that illuminates different parts of WWII history that are not normally encountered. Character interaction was believable and engaging. The book moves along at a good pace without delving into copious details ( )

This was a fascinating read about a part of history that I heretofore did not really know about. I grew up well aware of the Cold War and the Communist Bloc of Eastern Europe, but I, for one, was unaware of Churchill’s role in starting the Cold War with a speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Even reading the book, it was a surprise to learn what Churchill was going to say at a speech that Truman had invited him to deliver.

There is plenty of suspense in the book as well, chronicling the assassination attempt in Fulton. While we all know Churchill survived until I read this book did I know what happened in the West, and in the East. Absolutely suspenseful.

I believe that Target Churchill is very well researched and written with all the drama and suspense that one would expect from a crime novel. It is enjoyable on many levels; both in telling the history and also in the suspense surrounding the spies and the assassination attempt. I came away having learned a great deal about the beginning of the Cold War but also having finished a very enjoyable read. Even if you are not interested in the history of the period, this is a very suspenseful story and you should pick it up.

I would like to thank the authors, publisher, and LibraryThing for the copy. I have voluntarily left this review. ( )

Target Churchill by Warren Adler and James Humes was a very good novel. It is set at the end and in the aftermath of of WWII. It is about the Soviet Union and its attempts to set it on the path to get hegemony over the rest of world. This includes their 5th column movements in many of the western countries and the number of spies they infiltrated into the western world.

When it becomes known that Churchill has been invited to give a speech in the USA by Truman. The Soviet Union is desperate to find out the subject matter of the speech. With Churchill's known anti-communist feelings, they are also planning on how to blunt the impact of the speech or prevent it from being given.

This novel gave a good account of Churchill's life after being voted out of office at the end of WWII and the period before regaining the Prime Minister role in 1950's.

A very good novel if you are interested in the beginnings of the cold war. ( )

Intriguing tale of a what-if scenario involving a plot to assassinate Winston Churchill on a visit to America. Nice portrayal of all characters albeit a few one-dimensional and stereotypical figures. Overall,a good read with some true historical events in the mix. ( )

I thank the publisher for a free copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Target Churchill is an intriguing mix of historical information and a "what if" scenario. After World War II is supposedly over, "what if" a sleeper were in a position to assassinate Winston Churchill? I really liked the idea, and the the general situation seemed set up in a way that was reasonably plausible.

The prose was mainly tidy. I noticed a few typos, and I was particularly taken aback to find the author's name misspelled in the foreword.

In terms of the plot, it felt a bit... simple and linear for a book of this length. I enjoyed reading about Churchill himself, but most of the other characters were thinly portrayed, with the "bad guys" in particular feeling one-dimensional. For me, some encounters and incidents felt too coincidental to be satisfying, and the various players' decisions (and therefore actions) seemed arbitrary rather than driven by character, situation and so on.

We follow all the characters around and see inside their heads, and I had a very strong sense of the authors wanting to explain exactly what the characters were thinking and how they felt. This added to my impression of the book being written like an "actual historical account" rather than fiction. That didn't work so well for me. The central part of the book in particular felt very bogged down and redundant. The pace picked up again towards the end, but I still feel the strongest part of the book was the first quarter or so.
