But a psychic's warnings and markings on a rusted cigarette lighter found among the rotted remains take Gilchrist on a journey into his own past that brings him closer to discovering the identity of his brother's killer from a hit-and-run case some thirty-five years before. One third of the way through this third book in Muir's Andy Gilchrist series, I am thinking this is very, very good. Bones have been found in a cemetery but not in a casket. Clearly they have been there some time. And the case turns out to have close personal ties to St. Andrews police detective Andy. Very atmospheric, very tense. Lots of characters, most of them very interesting. Then the book just seems to get weighted down with too much detail. Too much who did what when. At one point near the end, Andy is sure he knows who the killer is. But the guy turns out to have a perfect alibi. Now Andy is sure he knows who the killer is. I liked the other two books as well but my recollection is that endings are not Muir's strong suit. And what ever becomes of Gina? It's as though Muir got bored with her and just forgot her. One last comment - "tooth" has just about nothing to do with the story. When the series "A is for..... " you knew a clever author could have a run of 26 stories. But after "Eye for an Eye", and "Hand", I feel Muir is beginning to struggle already with this anatomical title thing. Any guesses for future titles? ( )
