This companion provides a two-part introduction to best-selling author Stephen King, whose enormous popularity over the years has gained him an audience well beyond readers of horror fiction, the genre with which he is most often associated. Part I considers the reception of King's work, the film adaptations that they gave rise to, the fictional worlds in which some of his novels are set, and the more useful approaches to King's varied corpus. Part II consists of entries for each series, novel, story, screenplay and even poem, including works never published or produced, as well as characters and settings.… (más)

A very nice edition to add to a collection. As someone who has read King from his earliest works I was pleased to see that great effort and research was involved in producing this volume. I would recommend it for any new addition to his audience as well as to established collectors. I also loved the correlation between his general works and his works in the Dark Tower series. It is handy to be able to look that stuff up when you remember you've heard that characters name before... ( )

I had a hard time deciding who the audience for this book is. On the one hand it's a great reference book and would make a great addition to a library that wanted to put it on it's shelves. On the other, any hard-core King fan will have other reference books from much smaller publishers that contain many more entries and much more detail. So I suppose, if you're someone who wants a King reference but are unaware of the other titles and publishers I'm referring to, this is the book for you. Don't get me wrong though, that isn't a complaint as I do find it a nice addition to my personal King reference collection.

An overview of Stephen King's work with descriptive entries on all of his writings and major characters, as well as a complete bibliography. What I really appreciated about the book was the thorough information on the connections between different King stories, and the notes on the genesis of many of the works.

The author did make a decision to try and avoid spoilers in the entries which does make some of the descriptions, especially of characters, a little thin and cryptic since the entry can't really say much about what happens to the character or why they are important. The author is also a big fan of King's work, and tends to be quite uncritical. Lots of entries mention how important and amazing a work is, but there is not much to identify the poor works, of which King has had a number, although the author is willing to be very critical of many of the movie adaptations.

This is an interesting and well-researched reference that I think will mostly appeal to long-time King readers who want to know where they may have encountered a particular character before, and to the dedicated fan who is looking for more obscure works they have not read. ( )

This is a nice resource for the "Constant Reader." The author has written a nice preface and introduction to the works and the entries are informative, well written and cross-referenced nicely. All in all, a fun book for the Stephen King fan. ( )
