I loved Bishop's novel Brittle Innings, a strange hodgepodge of tropes and genres that shouldn't work but magically does. Surely the finest Southern Gothic WWII baseball novel/Frankenstein sequel ever written.

>20 elkiedee: I heard her speak once and thought she would be wonderful because I loved Possession but she was mind-blowingly boring. She was all into neurons and the art of painting them and spoke not at all about her work or writing. It was a big disappointment especially since it was at a writers series sponsored by a university.

>31 varielle: other than the goofy friendship with the Shah and his wife and the subsequent screw up with Iran the Carter administration IMO was the best of my lifetime. Another thing I really really liked about the Carter's is that unlike every other POTUS they never really monetized on their presidency afterwards. They went back to the family home in Plains Ga. and were quite happy there and basically devoted their lives to volunteer and community work and if asked world peace type of efforts. Good people at least from what I could see.

Shane MacGowan, singer songwriter best known as singer with Irish folk-punk (?) band the Pogues in the late 80s, has died in the early hours of this morning (on 30 November) at 65. He co-wrote a biography/memoir? A Drink with Shane MacGowan with his partner (and wife from 2018) Victoria Mary Clarke. I think perhaps stories of his lifestyle excesses have overshadowed the quality of his song lyrics.

Dale Spender, in addition to her own writing, was also associated with feminist publishing ventures, and bringing forgotten women writers back into print, in the UK and in her home country Australia, with Penguin Australia Women's Library and the Routledge imprint Pandora Press (I think there may have been more than one publisher or imprint called Pandora Press).

>48 elkiedee: That's a tough one. That said this is has been coming on for a while. He was in terrible shape some ten (?) years ago when my wife and I saw the Pogues in NYC. He's the same age as me but he was shuffling around the stage like an 80 year old. It didn't appear that the band were drinking anything but water that night though. He'd been in a wheelchair for at least 5 years and the last year he's been even much worse.

I came into the house this afternoon to hear Fairytale of New York playing on a news programme on a spoken word radio station - and I knew what that meant.

A phenomenal songwriter but he got an early start on the drinking when he was a child (I did too) and he went on with it a long time and there were drugs too.
