How to Delete Author?

1mrblond
Editado: Dic 13, 2020, 4:06 pm

The site is full mess.

How to delete this author so that to start again his adding to the site?
https://www.librarything.com/author/3137459353

I think this will be faster than starting to investigate how to correct things.

You cannot delete an author.

Okay, then how to add this book to his name:

A simple google search suggests that this is merely another rendering of Raymond Chandler.

>3 mrblond: Another google search is pulling up "The Big Sleep" by Raymond Chandler, so I THINK the thing to do is combine that work with the main work for The Big Sleep on Raymond Chandler's author page. I could be wrong, though.

All the problems started when I've tried to combine the newly added Реймънд Чандлър with Raymond Chandler and the system gave me one of the fake Raymond Chandler names as first suggestion of the search and ... then I've started some wild separating and now the new name is without book in its page.

I have combined that author page into the main author page for Raymond Chandler.

Always look at the suggested pages before combining.

>1 mrblond: Feel free to post any needs to combine, separate and such in the Combiners! group and somebody will usually do it very quickly (include links or touchstones for convenience). You can start combining yourself once you're more familiar with the site in general, but for starters it's probably better to enter your books, learn your way around parts of the site of interest and just enjoy, It's a huge database with a wealth of options, which can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be frustrating

I also think that most (if not all) of the works under the unknown Raymond Chandler probably belong to the famous one. For example, "The Little Sister" is there in German. I will move that one over. I don't have enough confidence with the others, my language skills being weak. However many of you probably would be able to read the titles and know what they are.

>9 krazy4katz: I suspect mrblond was misled by the zero works assigned to that author page into believing it was a "false" author identity.

LibraryThing only knows the names of authors and the works assigned to them. There is no such thing as "fake" author names (not in this sense, at least). However, combining author pages with no works isn't important, you can just let them be.

It is truly terrifying how many people think the solution to a problem is just to destroy other people's data.

>12 lorax: It is truly terrifying how some people write in the forum without being familiar what it is about.

It is not other people's data. It is about an entry I've just added and want to remove.

>13 mrblond:

But it is not. The moment you add the book, the author page and work page are created and they are now site level data and not your personal data. You can edit/change/delete your own copy as much as you want but the work/author pages do not belong to you and you cannot delete them.

This is how the site works.

mrblond (#13):

You're not the first, and you won't be the last. And many people do specifically ask to delete work data in general; if this was a zero-copy author it's less bad, but still selfish. "I can't be bothered to figure out how to clean up a mess, so I'll just delete everything so other people need to put it back together!" If you're not going to bother to say "I added this author and the data is bad, what's the best way to fix it?" and instead say "I want to delete this!" you can't really expect us to understand you mean the former.

BookstoogeLT:

I have never sent a nasty PM insulting anyone, unless they're spamming. And I'm not angry, just perplexed at the thought process leading to "destroying data is the best course of action".

>24 SandraArdnas:
1) To make them aware that their trying to be helpful and do the right thing might end up in something extremely unpleasant. When I invite some one over to my house, if I know there is a crazy dog chained up next store, I want to warn that person coming over so they are not surprised when it jumps at the fence at at them and starts barking long and loudly.

2) It seems that the only way to get Tim to act is to show that people ARE being driven away. So far, most people are just quiet and either stop doing edits/whatever or leave without making a big show. Most people don't want confrontation or fights. And I don't blame them.

>25 BookstoogeLT: Yes, but my point is raising that issue here and now, in this thread, where a new member asks for advice, makes us all look like a crazy bunch you'd be well advised to avoid and find some saner community ;) When in reality, it's predominately a very nice community.

>27 aspirit: I have been keeping an eye on that thread. He's done exactly nothing. He has sat back and pretended to deal with the problem while not.
As for responding to him, everyone else in that thread, and in the "how to deal with X people" thread here, has said everything that I could. Quite a bit better and with evidence. Which he has ignored.

Mrblond can make up his mind if he wants to get more involved or not. But now he knows what he might be getting into.

I'll be done now.
