Is there a wonderful novel about contemporary Greece and/or Greek life that's translated into English?

There are certainly lots of wonderful novels about Greece, though I guess - now you mention it - they do seem to be mostly set around the time of the 2nd World War. That shouldn't be a reason for missing out on such gems as Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Middlesex, The Island by Victoria Hislop, Little Infamies (interlinked short stories) or the biographical-but-every-bit-as-gripping-as-any-novel Eleni.
There are also those ones set in Ancient Greece such as The Song of Troy; Achilles; The Walled Orchard; the feminist take on the life of Odysseyus's wife, The Penelopiad and, one of my all time favourites, purely because it's such an engrossing read, The Athenian Murders.
In many ways, I find the less accessible areas of Greece to be largely unchanged from the Greece of many of these books so I don't really mind that they don't happen to be that up-to-date in their settings (I'm a devoted holiday-maker to this adorable country). However, you've set me thinking now. I will make it my mission over the next few weeks to see what else I can come up with.
