And having a 50% off sale (at the Lincoln Ave location). I had thought when I was there a few weeks ago, that it looked like they were slimming down their inventory...

I'm leaving Chicago myself in a little over a month. But it's still sad to think that the north side will no longer have a Powell's.

Not surprising, as the building has been on the market for quite some time.

But it also wouldn't kill north siders to head south occasionally. There is a world south of Roosevelt Road, even if they don't think so.

True. It just takes for..ever to get there from way up north (Edgewater, in my case).

Ride your bike and bring a big pannier. :-)

I came in from the far western 'burbs to Powell's on Lincoln yesterday. There were only three customers there at mid-day. Six atlases left with me. They had pretty good pickings left in all categories. I'm going back...

>2 lilithcat: I go regularly (3-4 X a year) to Powell's in Hyde Park. It's a wonderful book store to browse. Does that "count" more than just coming from the north side? :)

I have the mixed feelings of someone sorry to lose a good book store and the greed of a book lover seeking cheap books. I'll have to pop in and mournfully buy sale books.

I remember when the Powell's on Wabash closed, at about the same time that the Prairie Avenue Bookstore closed: http://joansbooks.blogspot.com/2009/08/please-support-your-local-independent.htm...

In countervailing news, there's been an announcement that the former Bookman's Alley in Evanston will be opening as an independent bookstore selling new books.

Hey! After "not closing" for such a long time, it appears Bookman's Alley actually did close. I'll have to do better about visiting the new store, I didn't make it to Bookman's Alley anytime after 1990 or so.
