This picture book recounts the emotional story of Maggie the elephant, who once lived in the Alaska Zoo. Following the death of her elephant companion Annabelle, Maggie suffered from extreme loneliness before she was placed in the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in California. Now Maggie thrives in friendship and the warmth of her new home.

This children's book is an exciting educational experience. I enjoyed this book very much and even got to meet the author when I was in elementary school. The language used is very descriptive when Maggie finds the eggs in her sandbox and they are pinkish with speckles. It is easy to fall in love with this book as a local Marylander who grew up just a few miles from the bay. This book pushes readers to connect to the environment and raising awareness. The big idea of this book is to relate children's literature in raising awareness for wildlife from their own backyards.

This book show how scientists are trying to keep species from going extinct. Marvelously encouraging, yet realistic. What wonderful effort for our biodiversity! I loved the illustrations, but I would also like to see some actual photos..

Braden and Finley are hiking in the woods one winter day with their wildlife scientist dad and his team when they encounter a mama bear and her cubs. The children are in awe that they can see this firsthand. They get to help their dad tag the mama bear and the cubs. This will help them to track where she goes during the summer. A call comes in that there is an abandoned cub and their dad and his team are on a mission to have the mama bear adopt this little cub. The story is based on an orphaned black bear cub rescue efforts by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. I would recommend this for any collection looking for stories about bears, rescue and wildlife. The illustrations are life like and help to make the story flow.

An Elephant in Alaska? Annabelle and Maggie were two elephants that lived in the Alaska Zoo. The cold didn’t bother them as long as they had each other, but when one of them dies how will the other one survive?
The author and illustrator create a heartwarming story about an elephant who is rescued from a zoo where she is no longer able to thrive. This title would be a good read aloud for ages 5-7. The author provides curriculum connections in the back of the book, as well as a website to explore additional resources. This title would also work well for older readers who are reading below grade level. The questions in the back of the book would provide further reading comprehension assistance.

This book tells the story of a rescued polar bear found in Alaska. The book is illustrated with high definition, but nonetheless amateurish photographs of a bear cub and its journey from rescue until it is finally placed in the Buffalo Zoo in NY. The text is easy for K-1 to understand and the story is relatively simple, and the pictures are cute.
I wouldn't read this book again because it does not provide any natural context for polar bear, but rather only shows them through the lens of a rescue situation, and all the animals in the book are animals held in captivity. The author never explains why the bear couldn't be released back into the wild and it actually reads as much like a kidnapping as it does a rescue.
While the overall design and publication of this book were adequate, the story overall did not sit well with me.

Photo-essay about orphaned polar bear cub rescued in Alaska and eventually sent to live in Buffalo Zoo. Irresistibly adorable photographs with simple, engaging text.

An elegantly written, handsomely illustrated to these unique, fascinating see creatures. A significant oversight is the lack of a bibliography though there are some suggested web sites.

With beautiful illustrations, this book captures the life science of a seahorse in a magical story of one seahorse through many stages of life. This story delivers many fascinating facts, while romanticizing the interaction between a seahorse and his mate.

REVIEW: "Like a tiny, mythical dragon, the seahorse is a fascinating creature: he changes color to fit in with the surroundings of his spectacular coral reef and sea grass surroundings; his lizard-like eyes can look in two directions at once; and when he has grown, he—not the female—will give birth to the next batch of whirling seahorses."-www.amazon.com

From publisher: Imagine finding turtle eggs in your sandbox! When a mother diamondback terrapin lays eggs in a young girl’s sandbox, the girl becomes a “turtle-sitter” to help the babies safely hatch. She raises the teeny hatchlings until they become big enough to fend for themselves in the wild. Then, with the help of experts, she releases them. Along the way, she learns about these unique animals and that she has made an important contribution to their survival. The “For Creative Minds" section includes terrapin fun facts and a turtle habitat craft.
