Interesting, but I was never able to totally get into it. Salme really deserves a biography of her own. ( )

A nicely written account of Zanzibar and it's rule under the Sultan's of Oman. This Island served as the staging ground for many ground breading expeditions into the heart of Africa including the ones by Dr. Livingstone and Morton Stanley in their quests to find the source of the Nile.

Also featuring in this narration are other related sideshows such as the brutal and inhuman slave trade carried on by the Arabs, Portuguese and Belgians, the scramble for Africa after the Treaty of Berlin, the various expeditions carried out by pioneers like Livingstone and Stanley, the early histories of this region and the spread of Islam and of course the centerpiece which is the life and times of the various Omani Sultans.
