Nightclub owner Shrimp Martin has been shot, and Hitchcock Sewell already knows who-done-it. It's his friend, Lucy Taylor, who went directly to Hitch's funeral home and placed the smoking gun on his desk. As it happens, Shrimp survives the gunshot wound, but he doesn't survive the knife that is plunged into his heart as he lies in his hospital bed. The police would like to question Lucy Taylor. But she has slipped away from Hitch's custody, hooked up with Hitch's ex-wife Julia, and the two have disappeared. Matters get more complicated when Shrimp's younger brother, also a friend of Lucy's, turns up dead. Is Lucy on a rampage? Is Julia somehow involved? As Hitch begins to nose about, he is joined by a private eye named Pete, who is in the full bloom of a mid-life crisis. A felonious painter, a Miles Davis wannabe, an Ida Lupino look-alike, the Great White Hope of Baltimore professional basketball, and one very angry dance instructor are just some of the characters Hitch and Pete encounter in this tale of greed, obsession, and misplaced loyalties.… (más)

Hitchcock Sewell is up to his ears in murder, and has to deal with a group of very colorful characters to solve this one. Delightful, light mystery series. ( )

Tim Cockey’s third book in his ‘Hearse’ series, the 2002-published THE HEARSE CASE SCENARIO, is a very funny tale of undertaker Hitchcock ‘Hitch’ Sewell’s investigation of a local murder.
I thought I knew who the murderer was, changed my mind, changed it back, and not once was I right. A part of what makes a great mystery is this: a story where you can’t guess the ending.
The story starts with Hitch’s friend Lucy appearing at his funeral home and telling him she just killed her boyfriend Shrimp, a local who owns a popular jazz lounge. More murders pile up and lots of people may have the motives to do them. Meanwhile: Krishnas give away food, a man has hands the size of toasters, and a large painting is maneuvered out of a second story window.
As I’ve said, this is a great mystery just in the fact that you can’t guess the murderer (at least I didn’t). Other strengths of this book include the great building of characters and the several sub-plots going on.
My favorite character has to be Hitch himself with his slanted look at life. His conversations with his P.I. friend Pete Munger are classic. Hitch has a fabulously dry sense of humor. I LOVED it and kept laughing out loud all through the book.
I believe everyone who likes a good modern mystery will enjoy THE HEARSE CASE SCENARIO.

We wanted a light and humorous mystery, and it was that. However, not everyone enjoyed the story or the characters. Not a favorite with the group. ( )

This book is a work of fiction. "Fiction" is roughly defined in most dictionaries as being made-up stories about made-up people. That's basically what we have here. More or less. Any similarities in this book to real-life people or situations is just one of those things. Honest.
