I figured out the twist pretty early, but that didn't detract from the read for me. I've been wanting to read Hughes and this encourages me to track down more of his stuff. ( ) An entertaining far-future homage to Gulliver's Travels, set in Earth's "penultimate age" in which both technology and magic operate. Hughes lampoons a number of our modern cultural excesses as our hero travels the world in the company of a cryptic servant of the Archonate that rules the planet. The hero starts out rather shallow and matures over the course of the book, but there are not enough recurring characters against which he can show this, so Hughes simply tells us about it through the vehicle of the hero's introspection. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

In the Penultimate Age of the Archonate, callow young fop Filidor Vesh is perfectly content to spend his days in the pursuit of shallow amusements, until he is summoned by a wizened old dwarf in need of a voluntary good deed -- deliver a parcel to his uncle, the all-powerful and original 98th Archon, sole ruler of the world. So begins Filidor's reluctant odyssey through peculiar provinces peopled with odious denizens, including such road killers as mutant rodents, alien ants, and a vengeful thamaturge. Now in terra incognito, his narrow conception of life shaken to the extreme, Filidor will strive to say and do the right things...and grow up in the process.
