I really think the content of this book is much more serious than its title suggests. I bought a copy online months ago out of curiosity more than anything else only to find its unique message so captivating that I ended up ordering two more copies for both my friend and sibling as gifts.

If you're a fan of John Gray’s ‘Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus’ you will no doubt be blown away by JL Shash's 'Ten Statements' (With the presumption that the reader isn't allergic to the bitter truth when it comes to relationships). This book, in my humble opinion, is a contemporary masterpiece which in contrast to John Gray's classic is much more applicable to the modern-day experience. Ten Statements not only ferries the reader through the maze of challenges men and women face in contemporary relationships, it also describes and prescribes - graphically - the solutions to the heartaches and frustrations encountered on day to day basis in our quest for true love and companionship. It's easy flow, coupled with Shash's ingenious blending of serious issues with occasional humour and metaphoric characters (Mr Bills, Godmothers etc.) makes it a real page-turner (Caveat: Some references in this book is not always for the fainthearted especially if the reader can relate to some of its cringe-worthy allusions). However, - without intending to give much away - the author also reveals the ultimate secret to finding true love and inner happiness in the closing chapter; a highly philosophical chapter, which I see as the soul and backbone of the entire book.

In all honesty, I've not, in a long time, been given a dose of comedy, tragedy and enlightenment all rolled into a single pill for my reading consumption. Will Ten Statements transform the reader's entire way of thinking? Maybe not. However, one thing remains for sure: this book was definitely no money down the drain for me and neither would it be a waste of reading time for anyone who is genuinely interested in its subject matter - especially those who are fortunate to get a copy for free. If what you seek is a rational and simplistic demystification of that often complex topic called 'relationships' , I would strongly recommend this book because truly, in the world of nonfiction, social commentators like JL Shash only spring up once in a generation! A book written so that even the layperson with extreme relationship problems can understand. The separation into statements helps the flow. It is written almost as a narrative guide, but very rarely actually quotes and quantitative data. I'm not certain whether that would've been easier to read, but it might have made it seem more substantial. ( )

Not sure if I could call them recipes but this was a very well done book. It is really full of great advice for the young and young at heart. I believe it would make a great gift for young adults or someone who falters from toxic relationship to another toxic relationship. ( )

A short read, but very informative. The writing style was very easy for me to read and follow. This book helped me realize, more in depth, the reason that previous relationships did not work. A good read if you have nothing else better to read. ( )

Fairly well-written book, not very long, giving the author's views on the way successful relationships should be conducted. Serious in intent, and flows easily. Nothing very startling, although no doubt useful to some people who have not thought about these issues. The chapter on sex and relationships is notably lightweight. I got this book free through Member Giveaway, but would not have paid for it had I flipped through it at a bookshop. ( )
