Ages 1-3. The cover sports the words "toddler friendly," and this certainly is. The book follows a little boy, beginning when he extricates himself from his crib and toddles in to wake his sleeping parents, and ending at nap time. The text maintains a rhythmic pattern that exemplifies how the child's life changes: "Good-bye, diaper! Hello, potty!" (with a true-to-life picture of the child "tinkling" on the potty). "Good-bye, bottle! Hello, cup!" has a marvelous close-up of the boy awkwardly drinking, with juice dripping on his bib. The watercolor pictures, reminiscent of the work of Helen Oxenbury, capture the delightful sense of being in a little kid's world. The effect will be as appealing to adults as to the intended audience, who will see this child's triumphs as mirroring their own. Ilene Cooper
