Equipped with space suits, golf clubs and a flag, the Doctor and Rose are planning to live it up, Apollo mission-style, on the Moon. But the TARDIS has other plans, landing them instead in a village on the south coast of England; a picture-postcard sort of place where nothing much happens. Until now... An archaeological dig has turned up a Roman mosaic, circa AD 70, depicting mythical scenes, grapes and a Dalek. A few days later a young woman, rushing for work, is knocked over and killed by a bus, then comes back to life. It's not long before all hell breaks loose, and the Doctor and Rose must use all their courage and cunning against an alien enemy and a not-quite-alien accomplice who are intent on destroying humanity. Featuring the Doctor and Rose as played by David Tennant and Billie Piper in the hit Doctor Who series from BBC Television.… (más)

This is a Ten and Rose story written for the Quick Reads series, which consists of titles written for an adult audience to help make readers out of those who struggle to read. As part of this series, it is short and punchy, moving along quickly and not delving into excessive scenery description or backstory. Ten and Rose are a good choice of Doctor and companion for this story, and Daleks are a classic element of any Doctor Who story. I would certainly recommend this for a reluctant or struggling reader in the preteen and up range. ( )

Doctor Who reinvented itself in the early 2000's being centred in the City of Cardiff and using the locality for many of it's location shots. "I am a Dalek" is a young adult short story that sees the Doctor and his trusty assistant Rose once again fighting his nemesis the evil Dalek with that familiar cry "exterminate" The tardis has landed in a village in the south of England where an archaeologist dig has just uncovered, along with some ancient relics, a rusty old Dalek. There is the usual standoff with our flamboyant hero (in this instant played by the excellent David Tennat) rushing around before emerging victorious and exiting into netherspace presumably to fight his arch enemy at another time and in another dimension. This is classed as a short read and not only is it a great introduction to Doctor Who but a good teaching tool to improve and encourage reading amongst the young in a time and a world dominated by facebook and twitter....that's the real enemy Doctor not the Daleks! As a massive Doctor Who fan, as soon as I saw this in the charity shop, I had to have it. It was only 20p so it was a good deal. As a short story it was good and I like the author's attention to detail about the way the 10th Doctor and Rose spoke and acted around each other.

Plot: 3/5

As the title suggests, in this story, the Doctor and Rose come face to face with a Dalek on Earth. I liked the plot as it sounded just like a miniature episode of the TV show, with the right amount of running and smart ass jokes by the Doctor. As it was only a short 100 page story I finished it in one sitting but the plot still kept me hooked as it was fast paced and exciting.

Characters: 4/5

The 10th Doctor and Rose were probably my favourite pairing of Doctor and companion so far and I enjoyed them just as much on paper as on the screen. Roberts has their relationship just right, with the joking but also the fondness they have for each other.

Overall: 4/5

I really enjoyed this short story and I can't wait to try and find some more of them to buy as I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this to fans of the TV show as it would probably appeal more you than someone who hasn't seen the show.

Young reader book. Still quite good. It has the feel, sound and action of a Doctor Who story. The Dalek is true to itself and The Doctor and Rose are in character. The Doctor is a little less manic than usual but then again he's facing off with a Dalek. It's a quick read but a good one. ( )

This was the first Quick Read book and so features the Tenth Doctor with Rose, battling against Daleks in a sleepy south coast town. It reminded me a bit of the episode Dalek, where Rose passes on some humanity to the lone Dalek, but flipped so that it's a Dalek passing on some of its Dalek-ness to a human. I think it also had some similarity to the Dalek Sec/Mr Diagoras hybrid and the Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks episodes. I found this book to be quite a good read, certainly the best of the Quick Read books, and possibly could have worked well as a full-sized story. It has some more adult concepts than the following books which is a definite plus as the others seem to be more aimed at children. I think if you're going to go for a Doctor Who Quick Reads book, go for this one. ( )
