Thirteen short stories by the legendary author of The Man in the High Castle and other science fiction classics.   Philip K. Dick didn't predict the future―he summoned the desperate bleakness of our present directly from his fevered paranoia. Dick didn't predict the Internet or iPhones or email or 3D printers, but rather he so thoroughly understood human nature that he could already see, even at the advent of the transistor, the way technology would alienate us from each other and from ourselves. He could see us isolated and drifting in our own private realities even before we had plugged in our ear buds. He could see, even in the earliest days of space exploration, how much of our own existence remained unexplored, and how the great black spaces between people were growing even as our universe was shrinking.   Philip K. Dick spent his first three years as a science fiction author writing shorter fiction, and in his lifetime he composed almost 150 short stories, many of which have gone on to be adapted into (slightly watered down) Hollywood blockbusters. Reading Philip K. Dick is to gradually have the ground under you tilt away from you. As you keep reading, the ground feels the same, still solid and supportive, but before you know it the tilt is just enough that you slide off your feet and land someplace you don’t recognize. Just a moment before you thought you were in control but Dick has taken over. The stories in this collection do a nice job representing Dick’s strength as a writer. My favorite is THE VARIABLE MAN where decisions are not made based on a human intuition for what’s right but on the probability of success. A sudden unexpected variable throws everything out of whack. Next favorite would be THE DEFENDERS where the Earth has been destroyed by war and the remaining combatants strike at each other from societies underground. Both these stories and much of his work deal with mankind abdicating his responsibility toward other humans, toward his planet and even himself and the inescapable price to be paid. This particular collection I got free on my Nook and is not the best. A couple of the stories are clunkers like THE EYES HAVE IT and THE CRYSTAL CRYPT but the highs are very high. ( )

Desuden en introduktion af John Brunner og et efterskrift af forfatteren.

"Beyond Lies the Wub" handler om en wub, der ligner et stort svin, men det er dumt at forsøge at slå en ihjel for at spise den.
"Roog" handler om en hund der tror skraldemændene er aliens der stjæler fra dens mennesker.
"Second Variety" handler om næste krig, hvor amerikanerne udvikler robotfabrikker der laver krigsrobotter - de nyeste varianter ligner mennesker og er tæt på at udrydde alle mennesker der ikke har søgt tilflugt på månebasen - pigen Tasso hjælper soldaten Hendrick med at finde ud af hvordan variant nr II ser ud.
"Paycheck" handler om Jennings der har været ansat i to år for Rethrick koncernen som elektronikmekaniker og en høj løn på 50000 credits mod at få slettet de to år af hukommelsen bagefter - nu vågner han og opdager at han har byttet lønchecken med en pose med syv tilsyneladende værdiløse småting i - men han ender med at få pigen og det halve kongerige.
"Impostor" handler om at en robot har taget Olrams plads eller har den?
"Colony" handler om Major Lawrence Hall der sammen med hundreder af andre er pionerkoloni på planet Blå men desværre er planeten beboet af en kameleonorganisme der kan efterligne alle uorganiske ting som mikroskoper og den slags helt perfekt - de forsøger at evakuere planeten ved at gå nøgne ombord i redningsskibet.
"Expendable" handler om at menneskene kom til Jorden udefra og forstødte myrerne fra herredømmet - siden har en krig raset i det skjulte med edderkopperne som en snedig allieret for menneskene.
"The Days of Perky Pat" handler om at efter atomkrigen får de få heldige overlevende - flukes - nødhjælp fra marsboerne men det bruger de til at lave rollespil med en barbie og ken-agtig Perky Pat og Leonard eller Connie Companion og Paul dukkefamilie.
"Breakfast at Twilight" handler om en familie der bliver suget 7 år ind i fremtiden til en mareridtsagtig verden i total krig - de kommer tilbage men må indse at det er for sent at ændre på noget.
"Foster, You're Dead" handler om Mark Foster, hvis far ikke har råd til at købe den nyeste model beskyttelsesrum hele tiden - så Foster du er død.
"The Father-thing" handler om at der ude i garagen lever et uhyre der har overtaget faderen og nu lurer på moderen og drengen Carter.
"Service Call" handler om at en mand dukker op for at reparere David Courtlands swibble men der er over 10 år til de bliver opfundet - og det går op for Courtland at en swibble er en mareridtsmaskine.
"Autofac" handler om autonome fabrikker i krig med hinanden om resourcer efter en atomkrig.
"Human Is" handler om at Lester Herrick er så utålelig at hans kone Jill Herrick synes det er en forbedring da hans krop bliver overtaget af en alien på Rexor IV.
"If There Were No Benny Cemoli" handler om at for at undgå retsforfølgelse opfinder de ansvarlige for krigen en syndebuk.
"Oh, To Be a Blobel!" handler om George og Vivian der var spioner for hver sin side i krigen og derfor er begge menneske noget af tiden og blobel i resten - til sidst bliver de skilt og George bliver blobel og Vivian menneske.
"Faith of Our Fathers" handler om at USA har tabt krigen mod Kina og nu lever under den absolutte velgørers åg.
"The Electric Ant" handler om Garson Poole der opdager at han er en elektrisk myre - dvs en organisk robot - og alle hans sanseindtryk styres af en mikroskopisk hulstrimmel - han klipper den over og det går ud over verden.
"A Little Something for Us Temponauts" handler om et hold tidsrejsende der bliver dræbt ved ankomsten tilbage - måske for at undslippe en løkke i tiden, måske for at komme ind i den.
