The victim is Dylan Platte, front man for the buy-out offer Emma turned down cold. Naturally, Emma is a prime suspect. Then it turns out that the dead man has a big surprise for the living–one that involves the glamorous Ginger Roth, a bodacious Alpine newbie who can perform the dumb blonde act in her sleep. Emma’s ever-inquisitiv a bullet, Emma and the rest of the e House & Home editor, Vida Runkel, plumbs her extensive grapevine, from the Burger Barn to the Venison Inn, determined to connect the dots. But when an Advocate insider is next to take Alpiners make it their mission to find a killer.

Plenty is going on in Alpine and Emma Lord is in the middle of most of it. She has a new, mostly inept reporter, a distant (in both senses of the word) male companion, and it looks like her almost stepchildren are coming to Alpine to try and buy her newspaper!
Someone in the middle of this has decided that it is a good time for a murder and, of course, Emma has to investigate for the newspaper.
I was a little worried that Emma would be fixated on Tom Cavanaugh, her former fiance who was killed a few books back. His son and daughter are the ones making an offer for the paper and bringing back memories, both good and bad, that Emma had thought were behind her. However, she manages to shake most of that off fairly quickly and focuses on finding a murderer and trying to help Tom's children.
Really good story, a bit fragmented with so many new characters to deal with. I'm still enjoying the series so will keep moving forward in my reading. ( )
A beautiful blonde with a figure that Venus de Milo would've envied walked into my office, sat down on the other side of my desk, crossed her long legs, removed her big, expensive sunglasses, and offered an appealing smile.
