This is the essential resource for anyone who wants to learn Spanish by the immersion method - taking classes at a Spanish-language school while living with a nearby Spanish-speaking family. Martha Racine Taylor, award-winning professor of Spanish, has researched and studied in language-immersion programs in Spain, Mexico, and Peru. After visiting Spanish-language schools in fourteen cities in Mexico, staying with local families, attending classes, and talking with students, teachers, and directors at each school, she created this book to address the needs of every student: * Individuals traveling in Central and South America * High school and college language students * Teachers and guidance counselors * Corporate executives * Attorneys * Medical professionals * Psychologists * Social services caseworkers * Law enforcement personnel * Journalists * Bankers * Real estate brokers * Chefs and culinary students * Artists * Athletes Martha Racine Taylor is a professor of Spanish. She earned her master's degree in Spanish through a 'three-summer' master's program sponsored by Sacramento State University. During this program, Martha stayed with local families and attended graduate classes at universities in three different countries: the University of Guanajuato in Mexico, the University of Madrid in Spain, and the University of San August'n in Arrequipa, Peru. In addition to teaching full time, Martha has planned and led study tours to Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala and Belize. She was chosen to represent the California Community Colleges on investigative trips to Costa Rica, Brazil, and Argentina, with the express purpose of visiting language schools. These trips were sponsored by CIE (Consortium for International Education), a nonprofit provider of travel services to colleges all over the US. In the course of more than 40 visits to Mexico, Martha logged at least 100,000 miles traveling throughout the country by car, bus, train, sailboat, airliner and private plane. She stayed with families, in boarding houses and hotels, aboard a sailboat and in campgrounds. Her travels have given her an in-depth understanding of Mexico and first-hand knowledge of how Mexicans live in cities, towns, and rural areas throughout the country.… (más)

This is a great place to start when looking into language schools. Having lived in Mexico during college to study Spanish, the book covers lots of the things we did not do when we went. It teaches you about lots of things you might not think of on your own but it admits it is not the only thing to use. It gives you lots of options for what you might think is more important as your needs may be different. Read the book, plan the trip and go learn Spanish.

The author lists Spanish language schools in Mexico and provides contact information, pricing, descriptions of the programs, and extras as well as information about the areas of the country that the schools are in and some general information about what to expect when going to a language school.

One thing to keep in mind: the author states in the introduction that she didn't include schools she thinks are bad, so don't go to the book looking for descriptions of schools to stay away from. ( )

"Spanish: Live It and Learn It!" is a well-written, carefully researched guide to Mexico's Spanish-language immersion schools. Author Martha Racine Taylor has done her homework, and her own appreciation of Mexican life and culture is evident. As she writes in her Introduction, she is talking to the traveler who laments, "I took three years of Spanish in college, but I can't speak it!"

Having just returned from a five-day visit to San Miguel de Allende, I feel like that traveler. True, I never had the three years (or any years) of college Spanish, but after eight visits to Mexico over more than 25 years -- in general, not precisely as a "tourist" but, rather, to visit my in-laws, who retired to San Miguel 20 years ago -- I still find myself in the position of knowing "muchas palabras" but not necessarily how to put those words together into a meaningful conversation that goes beyond marketplace transactions and small talk. If only I could stay for a year, I think, after each visit. "Real language learning takes place in the real world," Taylor writes, and I agree.

Still, when I picked up this book, I wondered whether it even makes sense, nowadays, to publish a guide like this one in print, as opposed to simply creating a website. Exchange rates, prices, and other specific information all change from year to year, if not month to month. If I wanted to get detailed information about a specific program -- what it cost, when the next session began -- I would most likely look online, rather than in this book (which came out in 2006) or, for that matter, any book. But at an earlier stage, for anyone trying to decide which Spanish-language program to investigate, or to compare the broad features of different institutions and courses of study, this book offers an excellent overview -- and, even more valuable, a lively, sophisticated perspective on living and studying in Mexico.
