Very satisfying conclusion to the Henry Rios novels. The "happily ever after" is a bit too pat, and frankly I'm sorry to see the story end, as I'd like to see Henry learn to have a family and to have prestige. ( )

I am a huge fan of Nava's Henry Rios novels. Henry is a gay criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles and his stories are about more than just the law. This one is the very best. Henry has a heart attack and gains a family. Unfortunately, when you finish the book you get to the Acknowledgements to learn that this is the last Henry Rios book and the end of Michael Nava's mystery writing. Very sad. ( )

This is the last Henry Rios mystery. And as interesting as Henry's relationship with Josh was in the previous books, the lovely evolution of his relationship with Johnny in this book is even better. Henry is at his most human here, fearful after a heart attack, dealing with unexpected family complications, hopeful as he meets a man he could love again. The mystery part works, but it the character relationships that drive this story. As far as I can tell, Nava stopped writing fiction after this one. While he did us the favor of leaving Henry in a hopeful situation that provides a fair coda to the series, the absence of more work from this gifted writer is our loss. ( )

Another enjoyable Henry Rios novel....i love these because they are nice quick reads and i always get caught up in the story....not the deepest things ever written, but i do read for pleasure and these have all worked for me.....sounds like he may be done writing for a spell...or maybe forever......i'd read another if he wrote it! This (last) of the Rios series is a little more relationship-novel than the others, but still has a very good whodunnit. It really succeeds in its attempt to make Rios a real human, not just Mr. Uber-Attorney. It's too bad, really, that Nava decided to stop writing mysteries and go off and live in the real world full-time (he's a staff attorney for the California Supreme Court in San Francisco), but fully understandable. Good novel with really high stakes (Rios' niece on trial for murder and Rios taking care of her son) - wish there were more, but this is quite the finale. Plus, there's a really happy ending - what more yould you ask? ( )
