Interesting stories about the lives of Chinese immigrants and their children in Canada. ( ) China Dog is a collection of short stories and gossip centered around the Chinatown way of life for new immigrants to "land of opportunity." There are a few of those short stories that really stand out for me -- the one about the older sister that comes from China and can't be happy in Canada despite mother's best efforts. Then there is the one about the two brothers who own the restaurant and one marries. They eventually become jealous of one another and one ends up killing the other. The restaurant is marked as 'unlucky.' I picked this book up because I have been fascinated with Chinese culture lately. The book provides a very subtle look at the heart of Chinese American culture without being overbearing. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
"A chorus of immigrant voices populates Judy Fong Bates's graceful and poignant first collection. Denizens of the ubiquitous small towns around Ontario, as far from their native land as can be imagined yet united by their proximity to the local Chinese laundry, her characters have in common their driving desire to assimilate, to fit in, to belong to a "majority" culture. But they are also people trapped by a certain cultural pride in confronting a world that may feign acceptance while at the same time reminding them that they are "other.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
