The operas of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan are an institution. Hesketh Pearson's biography is of the two men who together formed a famous partnership and he is interested in them as individual, quite different personalities - one of the explanations behind their equally famous quarrel. Pearson describes their lives rather than criticise their works. As the operas such as 'The Mikado' and 'The Pirates of Penzance' live on the stage, here their authors come to life in a biography. This book tells the story of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan rather than that of their music. They were certainly an interesting pair. Gilbert, something of a bully, but loved by the artists and Sullivan, a mousy man who feels that light opera was beneath his dignity. We even learn a little about Richard D'Oyly Carte, the entrepreneur who saw Gilbert, in particular, as an expendable pawn on the path to Carte's rise to grandeur in the sphere of Grand Opera. This was a desire which was not to be fulfilled. ( )
