Some nightmares are too terrifying to forget...Paul Mahan just wants to put everything behind him. The shadowy halls of Rookwood apartments, the building's bloodstained past, and most of all, the chilling supernatural presence he encountered there... But when Neve Cotter, a former Rookwood resident, reaches out to him for help, Paul finds himself unable to turn away. Neve's daughter, Ella, has been possessed by a tortured spirit that Paul freed from Rookwood's haunted grounds. Feeling responsible for the girl's pain, he agrees to accompany a paranormal TV show into the abandoned building, hoping to find a cure for Ella's curse. As Paul leads the group into Rookwood's labyrinth of shadows and illusions, he discovers that the dark, powerful presence that haunts his nightmares has returned. And it's stronger than ever before. This malignant entity feeds off an ancient power, a darkness that has festered within the building's walls for centuries. Even the destruction of Rookwood may not be enough to end its reign of terror...… (más)

This is the second book in the Asylum Series, and it picks up a year after the first one ends. Paul and Mike are drawn back into goings on at the asylum. The young girl who was involved in the first book is still being tormented by the spirits, and her mother asks for help. A “true hauntings” TV shown sends their team into the asylum (note: I screwed up; in my review of the first book in this series I had this TV team in it; I had read both books some time before I wrote the reviews and got them mixed up), stirring up trouble. And a new entity besides Palmer and the inmates of the asylum has risen, one far older than the asylum itself.

Paul and Mike seek out advice from one of Mike’s old professors, a specialist in myth and folklore. They find out the history of the site the asylum was built on, and realize there may be more than Palmer to deal with; the old entity doesn’t like to be disturbed and Palmer has disrupted his land.

I really enjoyed the old professor; he seemed rather Tolkien-esque. Paul and Mike get their characters filled out more. The TV team was enjoyable- as I said in my review of Rookwood Asylum, the psychic was amusing. The rest of the crew were likable people, and reacted to the mayhem as one would expect people to do. The story is suspenseful- is anything ever going to stop this thing?!?! And is anyone safe from it?!? ( )

An excellent ghost story that was well written and had believable well developed characters. Includes a great storyline, lots of intense action, and plenty of suspense. A scary story that was hard to put down. Highly recommended book and series. ( )

Early Reader review of the Rookwood Asylum by David Longhorn
This book was sent along with the Palmer Entity to introduce the reader to the odd cast of characters. The story blends rational events with supernatural ones in an interesting history of a burned building that had once been an asylum. Occupants from the past influence current residents in a variety of ways most ending with disastrous results. The story is left open ended with an ominous tone that makes the reader want to start the second book immediately to find the fate of the embroiled people both living and not.
Early Reader review of The Palmer Entity by David Longhorn
The second book picks up right where the first left off, but it lets the story become messier rather than tying up the loose ends. The psychic scenes become increasingly bizarre and the tenuous balance of natural to supernatural in the first novel is crushed by outlandish episodes that shock more than create unease. A brief address toward the end of the novel that uses “internet responses” to the events of the story which liken the evil doctor to a modern day messiah was a vey interesting take and that could have been very chilling had it been explored, but the final scene reverts to a thinner version of the prologue leaving the impression that the entire book had just jerked the reader in one big vicious circle.

Great 2nd story in this series. The evil Dr. Palmer is back and stronger. A new element with old pagen deities brings in some interesting elements. That action is more intense than the first book and I couldn't put it down. ( )
