Fiction. Set in Boston and London over sixteen years, TRUE FREEDOM is a panoramic account of how America came to fight Britain for its freedom in the eighteenth century. The Boston scene is set though vignettes about the people who shaped its history. Thomas Hutchinson, sixth generation of Boston aristocracy, whose wealth is seemingly unassailable. Self-taught medical doctor Thomas Young, an idealist meeting his hero Samuel Adams, who is determined to have his revolution. Their Sons of Liberty and Mohucks play a key role, all the time supported from London by the radical politician John Wilkes. TRUE FREEDOM is full of vivid period details, you can almost smell parliament in London or hear the clerks scribbling away in the American Department. So too, in Boston, you can picture Faneuil Hall, experience the might of the British navy in the harbour, and feel the grit and determination of the Boston people to defy parliament in London. Together they form facets of the main character: the Boston uprising. The facts are all there but by focusing on personal relationships, especially the one between the brothers Pownall, Michael Dean takes us right to the heart of identity and sovereignty.… (más)

This is my second attempt to post a review. The first attempt (lost in the ether net) was far superior.

This book examines --as with a microscope-- the events and machinations leading up to the first actual battle of the War for Independence. However, it is a fictionalized account more concerned with the good story than with verifiable facts. In the author's own words, "“where the demands of drama clash with accounts in the historical record, I have followed the demands of drama.”
Dramatic, it is. Michael Dean seems to have the inside track on many of the real people wrapped up in the actual events. He spends a great deal of time on the thoughts, motivations and minutia of Samuel Adams, Dr Thomas Young, Governor of MassachusettsThomas Pownell, his Lt Governor Thomas Hutchinson, British official (brother & rival of Pownell) John Powell, John Hancock, and others. We read little or nothing on other well known historical figures such as Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, Paul Revere, even George Washington. I would love to have seen an historian's educated guess as to the inner workings of those minds as well. ( )

A storyfied version of the events leading up "the shot heard 'round the world." Taking place mostly in Boston and London, this novel touches events such as the Stamp Act and the Boston Tea Party, the building of the resistance, and the British refusal to consider their actions were driving the Americans to war. Now, this is a novel so the author is not bound to follow a historical course for his characters, but I think development the characters a little more -- better explaining the motivations how they got to the point of planning rebellion at the novel's outside, would have made this a much more compelling (and readable) story. I suppose one might consider that politicians of average skill imposing their will on average people of no great means or ability can nevertheless spark events that would drive the creation of a new nation - but the characters as presented are just too pedestrian see such a grandiose outcome to their actions. I had some difficulty with this book, I went in really looking forward to the story but somehow never really got into the story and kept getting sidetracked.and never got invested in any of the characters. its not as bad as a russian novel but it was a slog to the end.. ( )

I really wanted to enjoy this book, and many of my fellow ERs did, which goes to show you that opinions are are varied as the topics that are written about. I found the convenience of weaving all these stories together, and least to my eye, didn't seem to be historically accurate, but it's entirely possible that I was wrong. I also was not the biggest fan of the ... political leaning Mr Dean took on, not the founding of liberty, but rather the means used to go about getting that freedom. It is a fine line to walk - glorifying freedom fighters, and I think Mr Dean could have used an editor from the opposite political spectrum to maybe provide some balance. It's a long read, so prepare to settle in with a Sam Adams, while you follow Sam Adams. ( )

Focusing on the period leading up to the American Revolution, I learned so many things while reading this book. Written as a novel, it is based on facts and minor characters that don't usually make it into history books get major playing time here. A fascinating read! ( )
