Sometimes the price of destiny is higher than anyone imagined.... Dark Magic, Hidden Destiny For three centuries a divine prophecy and a line of warrior queens protected Skala. But the people grew complacent and Erius, a usurper king, claimed his young half sister's throne. Now plague and drought stalk the land, war with Skala's ancient rival Plenimar drains the country's lifeblood, and to be born female into the royal line has become a death sentence as the king fights to ensure the succession of his only heir, a son. For King Erius the greatest threat comes from his own line -- and from Illior's faithful, who spread the Oracle's words to a doubting populace. As noblewomen young and old perish mysteriously, the king's nephew -- his sister's only child -- grows toward manhood. But unbeknownst to the king or the boy, strange, haunted Tobin is the princess's daughter, given male form by a dark magic to protect her until she can claim her rightful destiny. Only Tobin's noble father, two wizards of Illior, and an outlawed forest witch know the truth. Only they can protect young Tobin from a king's wrath, a mother's madness, and the terrifying rage of her brother's demon spirit, determined to avenge his brutal murder....… (más)

Wonderful. This is not a very fast book, and in principle, not that much is happening, but it is fascinating nonetheless. The premise of a girl disguised as a boy from birth is what shapes the book. Tobin's personality and his/her development carries the story forward and is lovely to read. I absolutely loved this book. ( )

If exploring the slipperiness of gender means putting a child in between hollow twodimensional clicheés of men and women to you this might be just the book for you.
Men are brave full of pride eager to fight in battle and slaughter and the only other thing on their minds might be fucking and drinking.
Women only want to turn men's eyes, wear pretty clothes, jewellery, want dolls and be equals to men except they are portrayed as superior in every way but shunned nonetheless because men are pigs.
There are a few better fleshed out characters I'll grant but that is only because court intrigue and plot require some motivation for people to not just act like pitiful stereotypes.
I originally gave this book 3 stars but after reading and suffocating in the second one which gets much worse in all the aforementioned aspects I have to correct this down to 2 as my rating was in good faith to the shortcomings being resolved and more depth to become visible later. This is most certainly not the case.
In short, big parts of this series are shallow, undifferentiated and sexist despite the attempt of being the exact opposite. ( )

This was an incredible read! I especially love how much work Flewelling did to queer so many fantasy tropes!! Beautifully written, engaging and most of all INTERESTING in a genre that is hard to keep fresh! Can't wait to start book two! ( )

thoughts before reading

I read this as a teenager and absolutely adore it. I read it so many times. sometimes I would start all over again just as I finished book 3. What I remember the most were the feelings it evoked in me. The way the main character felt out of places in their own skin. But gradually being ok with who they were even after life changing events.

I also remember liking the main male character. The was the friend I wanted to have. funny, goofy but with an iron core. loyal to a fault. Also when the main character falls in love with him I did too. But even after he rejected the main character (he goes for girls not boys) he goes it in a way... that I couldn't hell loving. way different than all this 'macho' guys who thought that you could somehow catch the gay? And thought that if someone of the same sex fancied you that was an insult.

Yup this book (and series) had an impact on teenager me.

I'm a bit scared to read this again after so many years. But I believe books should've be reread and that the great ones will hold up through time.

(Note to myself: stop using goodreads on your tablet. autocorrect is a bitch and you always end up retyping some part of your review.
