I have no idea why the other readers of this collection would have given it five stars, some narratives are contestable and I really wanted to like this book but Kenny overwrites every single story. The only one with any measure of restraint is the documentary fiction piece at the start "Black Kettle: Fear and Recourse" which is still overwrought and confusing despite the simple language. Most of these tales are ghost stories in some regard and practically all of them deal with man's, Native American or white, relationship to nature. There are some worthy themes but it appears the University of Michigan Press had no editors willing to bring this collection up to a reasonable standard of engaging literary fiction. ( )
