Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons and her father's only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, it's no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern can't hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. It's adventure, not commerce, that stirs her soul. And despite her family's misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down. Expelled from the Academy in disgrace--and returning home to her humiliated family, a storm of high-profile media coverage, and the gaping void of her own future--Ky is ready to face the inevitable onslaught of anger, disappointment, even pity. But soon after opportunity's door slams shut, Ky finds herself with a ticket to ride--and a shot at redemption--as captain of a Vatta Transport ship. It's a simple assignment: escorting one of the Vatta fleet's oldest ships on its final voyage...to the scrapyard. But keeping it simple has never been Ky's style. And even though her father has provided a crew of seasoned veterans to baby-sit the fledgling captain on her maiden milk run, they can't stop Ky from turning the routine mission into a risky venture--in the name of turning a profit for Vatta Transport, of course. By snapping up a lucrative delivery contract defaulted on by a rival company, and using part of the proceeds to upgrade her condemned vehicle, Ky aims to prove she's got more going for her than just her family's famous name. But business will soon have to take a backseat to bravery, when Ky's change of plans sails her and the crew straight into the middle of a colonial war. For all her commercial savvy, it's her military training and born-soldier's instincts that Ky will need to call on in the face of deadly combat, dangerous mercenaries, and violent mutiny.… (más)

Elizabeth Moon is a journeyman writer whose fiction is always entertaining and readable. Her Trading in Danger combines elements we have seen elsewhere, but she handles them deftly. The ansible, a concept and a term borrowed from Ursula K. Le Guin, is so often borrowed by other writers it is almost as ubiquitous as Asimov’s three laws. When they fail, it is like the Internet going down. The military space academy with its strict honor code is also a familiar trope. So is the expelled protagonist. Bujold’s Miles Vorkosigan is bumped for broken bones. Moon’s Kylara is booted out when she becomes a public relations problem for the commandant. An untested heroine who rises to the challenge when faced with war and mutiny is a character type that stretches from Horatio Hornblower to Honor Harrington. These familiar devices are not necessarily flaws in science fiction, any more than a Renaissance painter would be disparaged for painting one more Madonna and Child. Trading in Danger combines a space navy story with an interstellar trade story and makes all the pieces fit together. Rereading it was a pleasure. As Kylara would say, “Trade and Profit.” 4 stars. I am a big fan of fantasy and science fiction novels especially if they are long and have several books in the series. I really enjoy a series of books that I can immerse myself in and I first picked up an Elizabeth Moon novel because it was long and part of a multi-novel series. I continue to read her books because I find them engrossing and highly enjoyable. ( )

For a book about a budding new starship captain in a big universe - remarkably little happens. I swear more time is spent flattering the main character and recounting events than events actually happening. ( )

(This review is for the entire series, not just the first book.)

The Vatta's war series starts off quite well, and ends pretty well too. It definitely held my attention all the way through. Lots of action, interesting characters, pretty interesting world.

The main reason why I gave this a three star rating rather than higher is that there were too many coincidences to be believable. Out of all the possible people who could be on that space station, one of the main characters just happens to take refuge in the shop of someone who, it turns out, she used to know very well. Or thought she did, anyway, which is another astounding coincidence: the one person in the whole universe who could fix their problem just happened to have set up his shop where it needed to be. Or: a certain technology just happens to replicate itself under totally unexpected conditions, which amazingly works out to the convenience of the main characters. There were a few things like that that really bothered me as I read, that I thought significantly sullied what was a quite enjoyable bit of space opera.

I don't remember the first book bothering me in any way; it was mostly the later books that suffered from suspension of disbelief. But even so, they were still pretty good, and I mostly enjoyed them. I don't really regret buying the whole series, though it took me a long time to decide to buy the last one after I had bought all the others.

As others have noted in their reviews, the last book leaves a number of questions unanswered; it feels like stuff had been written and got chopped because the story was already too long. It didn't really bother me, because all the *important* stuff was wrapped up. ( )

4.25 stars - a very enjoyable story about the very young female captain of a trading vessel in space. She's supposed to take it on its last voyage, but can't resist the temptation to try to make enough profit to save it from the scrapyard - which strands her defenseless in the middle of a small war. If you enjoy realistic character-focused stories of clever problem-solving, negotiations, handling unfair accusations and some action, then I think this would be a good recommendation.

I enjoyed it immensely and read it very quickly, feeling very engaged the whole time. But don't expect spaceship battles, this is more focused on contracts, commerce and dealing with difficult people and tricky situations while learning some hard life lessons (and a bit of hand-to-hand combat). Small negatives: a bit too much praise for the protagonist for my taste (though not unrealistic) and the effects of two weeks of reduced calories are exaggerated a lot, but that didn't really lessen my enjoyment of the story. I'm very happy to have found a new series to dive into. ( )
