Pig Tails 'n Breadfruit: A Culinary Memoir por Austin Clarke (sgump)
sgump: A charming memoir of life in (not "on") the island of Barbados in the 1940s and '50s (if I recall correctly). After the introduction, all of the chapters incorporate traditional recipes, narrated in the Barbadian (Bajan) patois. They invoke the speech and speech patterns of Ann Vanderhoof's Grenadine friends (although I stereotype here, I'm afraid, having been to neither Barbados nor Grenada).… (más)

Very much enjoyed this book about a couple who decided to leave their jobs and sail the Caribbean for two years.

Some sailing, some recipes, some colorful characters but mostly just some nice stories that really give the feel of island life.

I want to plan another vacation after reading it. ( )

By the end of the book I was visibly wincing every time the author used the word "cruisers". I don't know why that term really irritated me, but it did and she used it A LOT. Otherwise I found her and the book quite likable. ( )

The author, Ann, and her husband, Steve, decided to take two years to sail to and around the Caribbean. This is a memoir of their journey.

I enjoyed this. There was a little too much discussion of local food (with recipes included) for me, but I'm sure there a lots of people who would enjoy that. It does help with describing the culture of all the various places/islands they visited. Along the way, they also met plenty of other cruisers and locals. At the end of the book, I would have liked to hear a bit about how they got over what must have been some culture shock coming back home. They did go back to visit in the Caribbean a few years later, though, so we did get a few updates of some of the local people they'd met. ( )

Middle-aged white couple buys a sailboard and takes a two-year sea voyage, mostly around the Caribbean. The husband is really the sailor in the family but the wife finds a way to make the trip her own as well—mostly through cooking. Through befriending locals, she learns to cook a variety of new foods and, of course, they have all sorts of adventures—some of them dangerous. I found it a little dull, but only because travel writing just isn’t my cup of tea. It’s fairly engaging; if it sounds like the sort of thing you normally like, then you’ll like it. ( )
