Where the Road Ends: A Home in the Brazilian Rainforest por Binka Le Breton (Trufflehound)
Trufflehound: Similar to The Spice Necklace in that it is the story of a family who uprooted themselves from a standard and comfortable Western life and went on an adventure to an exotic place where they knew no one.

Wonderful reading; fabulous recipes. ( )

This is a book for a neophyte or for a novitiate. It is not for the historian or the chef. It is not for the person seeking an in-depth discussion of the culture, especially that associated with food, or history of the eastern Caribbean. The book does come with a helpful map, a fact of which more publishers should take note as it is very helpful. This book is part travelogue part cookbook. The cookbook part of the book is full of recipes that sound delicious and chocked full of helpful hints and tips. It is a quick and easy read full of tidbits of history, culture, and travel experiences. This is the kind of book that a person would read either before they take a trip somewhere or after they come home and want to revel in the experience. This is the kind of book that will lead the reader to delve further into the history and culture of the area. ( )

This book certainly works as a stand alone, even though it is actually the second installment of the story, which I didn't realize till I read the back inside cover :) It is a memoir, not a work of fiction, & I am so envious of their travels in the islands :) Makes me want to turn around, sell everything, buy a boat & travel :) It's a heartwarming book, full of fun & laughter. The RECIPES that conclude each chapter mostly look AMAZING!!!!

People that like books about travel will enjoy this book, people who love books about the islands will enjoy this book, people who like history will enjoy this book, because you do get bits of the histories of the islands thrown in along the way, which I found fascinating as well. People who like Jimmy Buffett books will definitely enjoy this book. Oh, & COOKS will love this book because it will give them all sorts of new things to try!!!

Now I am going to hit up the bookstores to find the FIRST book that she wrote, An Embarrassment of Mangoes :) ( )

You don't read this story so much as inhale and taste it. A wonderfully tantalizing culinary primer on the island food culture of the West Indies. ( )

I couldn't get beyond my hatred of the authorial voice. There's this undertone of superiority that I think is totally unintentional, but it's grating. I didn't like the tone, I couldn't get past my perceptions to fully enter into the narrative. Just didn't like it one bit. ( )
