Throughout the series, the protagonists go from being abused by their powers, to gaining control over them, to abusing them, to finally learning how to responsibly use their abilities. The epic conclusion to the characters' journeys raises philosophical and spiritual questions about the origin, nature, and purpose of their powers. The author has characters discuss different theories and hold different beliefs; he neither ignores the subject of the supernatural nor gives the final word, encouraging the reader to make up his or her own mind on the subject. There is much here for students or patrons to debate and discuss, although the teacher or librarian would have to be extremely good at discerning their ability to moderate such potentially sensitive subjects.

This closing third of the Star Shards was more entertaining that the first two, involved more serious issues of morals, but still is a very harsh read for younger teens. ( )
