"As the holidays draw near in Caerphilly, Mother volunteers to take part in in a big Christmas-themed decorator show house--each room of a temporarily untenanted house is decorated to the hilt by a different decorator for the public to tour. Of course, Mother insists that Meg pitch in with the organization, and she finds herself surrounded by flamboyant personalities with massive egos clashing and feeling their professional reputations are at stake. Then the rooms start to be sabotaged, and an unfortunate designer turns up dead--making Mother a prime suspect. Can Meg catch the real killer in time to save Mother the indignity of arrest? The brilliantly funny and talented Donna Andrews delivers another winner in the acclaimed avian-themed series that mystery readers have come to love. Cozies make excellent stocking-stuffers, and Nightingale Before Christmas is guaranteed to put the "ho ho hos" into the holidays for the legions of fans hungry for another Christmas book featuring Meg Langslow. Donna has won many awards for this very popular series, and continues to come up with new hilarious adventures for her endearing heroine. The novel is full of superb screwball comedy as well as Donna's trademark crisp plotting, not to mention bushels of holiday cheer--it wouldn't be the most wonderful time of the year without it. Bookbox; a humorous murder mystery. One of the designers of the Caerphilly Holiday House is found murdered. Meg is always settling disputes amongst the designers, so did one of them do him in? Meg is darting here and there in the "twinmobile" and seems to know just everyone in town on a first name basis - or is related to them - so you pick up pieces of the mystery through her eyes the whole way. Loved "Our Lady of Chintz" and "Vermillion" nicknames for two of the designers. ( )

The Nightingale Before Christmas by Donna Andrews is a 2014 Minotaur Books publication.

I’ve been leisurely reading through this series for a while now- This eighteenth installment was the next book in line- and happened to be one of Andrews's Christmas themed novels- which was fortuitous as I had been thinking of doing a ‘Christmas in July’ read- so- win-win!

This is another hilarious chapter in this long-running series. The premise is a little offbeat- and occasionally Meg’s inner thoughts and musings go a little too far off the rails, but there were some laugh out loud moments involving the twins's Christmas pageant- and if you aren’t familiar, Andrews always adds something a little more heart warming to her holiday novels, in keeping with the Christmas spirit.

As to the mystery, it was solid enough, with a nice unforeseen twist, that kept me from fully guessing whodunit.

Overall, this was another madcap adventure for Meg- with ‘Mother’, Michael, and the twins playing the prominent roles. This turned out to be a perfect choice for a little ‘Christmas in July’ fun!

In this Meg Langslow series Christmas novel, Meg’s twins are now five. Meg’s mother is participating in the historical society’s house decorating contest—and Meg has somehow been roped into organizing it. The house they are decorating has plenty of rooms and each designer has been given a room… which is causing mayhem and sabotage. When the most difficult designer turns up dead, and someone is stalking Meg, she tries to piece together who could be the killer before they catch up to her. I loved the way the author combined Christmas and a crazy decorating show in one for this one. Everything was over the top and fun in the usual Donna Andrews style. ( )

I would have been finished much earlier but I mixed this one up with one of the books further along in the series. This is the problem with a long series where almost 1/3 of them are Christmas-themed(8 out of 30 to be exact). I had few quibbles with the one... a small one being the kids that are rather bland and conveniently out of the way for most of it. Another being the lack of other family members and the final one being the lack of a B-romance side plot. They make things a bit more interesting. But it had some great moments and characters. ( )
