I received this book through LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I requested it for my stepdad who has Parkinson's disease. He is an avid golfer and does yoga often. He tries to stay very active to keep the disease at bay. So, I thought he would find this book beneficial. He said the instructions were easy to follow and he found the photos very helpful. He said he didn't necessarily notice improvements in his health after trying this yoga, but that it gave him some new positions to try which he enjoyed. And when you have Parkinson's disease, the best thing you can do is keep moving. So overall, he found this book very helpful and would recommend to other people who have Parkinson's disease, or really anyone who wants to try yoga. I expected the usual rehashed yoga instructions but instead found a book that not could only be applied to Parkinson's (which I don't have) but to Fibromyalgia (which I DO have). Even the reasoning about why yoga helps Parkinson sufferers can be similarly applied to Fibro. I suspected this might be the case, too, which is why I asked for a copy of the book. The photos are helpful and plentiful and there's even a section that shows yoga being done on a bed -- something which ANY Fibro sufferer will greatly appreciate. I wish that the book title had been less specifically addressed to Parkinson's and more to diseases/problems of muscle and joints so it would have reached people with Fibro and other related diseases. If you have any disease that makes movement difficult, painful, energy-sapping or awkward, YOGA AND PARKINSON'S DISEASE may be just what you're looking for even if Parkinson's, specifically, isn't what you have. The were also a lot of pictures included. My father had Parkinson's (has recently passed away) but I know this book would have been beneficial to him. It gives a person hope that there are alternative methods of healing. Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing. I have been practicing Yoga for six years now. My father also has Parkinson's disease. After reading some research on Parkinson's therapy, I heard that Yoga could be very beneficial. Convincing my father to join me in Yoga has been a challenge, though. It hurts to move for him and he had a lot of stereotypes about Yoga practitioners in his head. I thought this book might help us overcome those things. The book is clear, concise, and well designed. The pictures are black and white but clear enough that you can see the movements. Most importantly, it was very approachable. Even my father read it quickly and willingly. Taking a suggestion from the book we practice a few of the easiest asanas together when he wants to. I can't speak to actual health benefits for my father, but it has been the perfect step in a more holistic and promising health care plan. It also helped us discuss what was going on with him and his Parkinson's disease. I don't live with him and my mom, but I visited a couple times a month at least. It can be tricky to talk about how he feels and how I can help. This book was a great conversation starter. I applaud the author for her work! My wife works in Physical Therapy and this is a good way to introduce it. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Yoga and Parkinson's Disease is a practical how to guide to using yoga to manage stress, improve mental alertness, increase flexibility, correct posture and improve the quality-of-life of readers with Parkinson's. It follows the author's own experience and research studies in the subject that have shown a correlation between yoga practice and better health and outcomes after a Parkinson's Disease diagnosis. More than simply an exercise guide, the book is a deeply soothing form of moving meditation and physical activity that is a safe way to rebuild strength, stamina, and flexibility.
