For anyone of my vintage Johnny Morris was an institution. He was the presenter of Animal Magic, in which he introduced children to animals and the natural world, all by making it all very un threatening. He would also (and I ssupect this would be massively frowned upon today) would do a piece in which he would voice over a film (usually of him taking part in zoo keeper's activities) in which he would also the animals as well as himself. Let's just say it was the 70s and you probably had to be there.
He does all the voices in this as well, matching each voice to thr animal, to give an impression of its size, movement and mood. And that's partly what makes this quite so enthalling. His voices make the animals seem more real (even though that is an oxymoronic statement if ever I wrote one). The stories themselves aren't new, but they did feel fresh, even though this was recorded in the 1980s! The Camel gets his hump, the Elephant's child his trunk, the leopard his spots and all is well in the world, best beloved. ( )
