Want a superior vocabulary? Let Direct Hits help. Words are our tools for learning and communicating. A proficient and robust vocabulary is critical to success in school, business, the professions, AND standardized tests such as the PSATand SAT. But even the most dedicated students dread memorizing long lists of seemingly random words. Like its companion book "Volume 1," "Direct Hits Toughest Vocabulary of the SAT Volume 2 "offers an approach that places the words in a context students can easily understand and remember. The books include the following features: - Over 250 of the SAT s most challenging words (those that often appear in Level 4 and Level 5 questions), not a phonebook-size list of words that never appear on the SAT - Relevant, vivid, and memorable examples from popular movies, television, literature, music, historical events, and recent headlines - Five easy-to-tackle chapters - A Fast Review with quick definitions - A Final Review with critical reading and sentence completion questions just like the real SAT Building on the success of previous editions, the authors of "Direct Hits Toughest Vocabulary of the SAT" consulted secondary school teachers, tutors, parents, and students from around the world to ensure that these words and illustrations are right on target to further prepare you for success on the SAT.… (más)

This book is jammed packed with words and nemonic devices to help you remember them. I liked it a lot, and it helped me learn a lot of new words (but I'll hafta read it a couple more times to really cement them in my mind). The only issue I had with it was they used the same example format over and over. Example: What do (x) and (y) have in common? (SAT word)! It got a little repetitive by the end. But that was just bothersome, they were still good examples. And then there are practice questions in the back of the book. Those were a nice touch.

PS, I got this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. ( )

Great not only for SAT prep but as a high school home school vocabulary course. Well worth the time. :-) ( )

Excellent review for someone preparing for the SAT or ACT exam. Also could be used for HS vocabulary for homeschoolers. ( )

While we are just getting to the stage of preparing for the all-important SAT, this book provided us with a good idea of some of the more obscure words that my sons can expect to see on the test. It's presented in a manner that will instruct and challenge the student. ( )

I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway, and let me tell you I really enjoyed it!

It is so comprehensive and user-friendly. Most resources of this nature simply give the word with its definition and use it in a sentence, but the beautiful thing about this book is how they take the time to weave the vocabulary into descriptions of historical events, movies, and the lives of people we are mostly all familiar with. This method gives you mental cues as to the meanings of the words because you now have multiple real life and memorable things the words are connected with.

Whether you are a student swirling in the depths of SAT preparation or just a person looking to better yourself and build your vocabulary, this is one worth grabbing.

My only bit of negative criticism is that I would have liked to see the pronunciation under (or beside) each of the main vocabulary words. These are some of the toughest vocab words from the SAT, and I always like to know that I'm pronouncing things correctly.

I look forward to adding the first volume from this series to my collection as well! A big thank you to Direct Hits Publishing for creating a resource that will be helping out myself and my family for years to come.

Readers and studiers, enjoy! ( )
