Not a mystery as much as a suspense story, a la Ruth Rendell. A man’s mistress moves in, much to the distress of his young daughter. The father is distressed too, as his beloved solitude and routines are now completely upset.

Author Fremlin is masterful (and funny) in her accurate portrayal of how people really think and feel, as opposed to how they behave. But overall this book is pretty creepy. (

When a London scientist learns that his long-time mistress is now free to marry him, he is less than enthusiastic, but his horror grows when he realizes she is a monster in disguise and that she has evil designs upon his teenage daughter. This is a very-well crafted suspense novel with a (slightly) surprising ending. (
